NURSING PROGRAM
A nursing career in provides a wide variety of job opportunities. Nurses practice in a wide
variety of settings which may include care of infants, children, adults, or the elderly. Colby
Community College offers a Certificate in Practical Nursing, offered at Colby, Norton, and
WaKeeney. Successful completion of the Practical Nursing Program qualifies the student
to be eligible to apply to write the licensure exam for practical nursing.
An Associate in Applied Science Degree in Nursing, which qualifies the student to be
eligible to apply to write the licensure exam for registered nursing, is offered at Colby,
Norton, and WaKeeney. Classes are offered via distance learning to Norton and WaKeeney.
Pre-nursing courses necessary to work toward a baccalaureate degree in nursing are also
available.
CURRICULUM
The nursing curricula includes nursing and non-nursing courses which help develop wellrounded, competent nurses. Coursework includes classroom, laboratory, and clinical
experiences. Supervised client care experiences occur in hospitals and long term care
facilities with a number of observational experiences at additional facilities such as day care
centers.
The nursing program is comprised of semester hours. 16 contact hours = 1 semester credit hour.
Theory hour ratio is 1:1. Clinical / lab contact hours to credit hour ratio is 3:1. For example: A 1
credit hour of theory will generate 16 contact hours and 1 credit of clinical/ lab will generate 48
contact hours.

BSN program take the 5 Cr. hr. Microbiology course.
