UT Standards Academy Lesson Plan Template: TITLE – With Grade Level and Topic -My Mom's Molars or my Dad's Dental Dilemma? What traits did I get from my parents? -7th Grade -1 Minute movie about genetically transferred traits GENERAL: Summary – 3- 4 sentences Students will develop a one minute movie depicting the genetic transfer of traits from parent to offspring. Movies will focus on differentiating between inherited traits and learned traits. Science Curriculum Standard Tie – Disciplinary Core Idea (K-12 Framework) Standard 4 Students will understand that offspring inherit traits that make them more or less suitable to survive in the environment. Objective 1 Compare how sexual and asexual reproduction passes genetic information from parent to offspring. Disciplinary Core Ideas LS3.A: Inheritance of traits ILO – Science and Engineering Practice (K-12 Framework) ILO: 3b Distinguish between examples and non examples of concepts that have been taught, 4f Construct models to describe concepts and principals Science and Engineering Practice: Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information Cross Cutting Concepts (K-12 Framework) Patterns Stability and Change Math and/or ELA Curriculum Tie Writing Standard 3 Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences. Sexual reproduction requires two parents, and provides variety in a species. This variety may allow the species to adapt to changes in the environment and help the species survive. A species may change due to the passing of traits naturally or by techniques used and developed by science. Genetic information is passed on in a predictable manner. Instructional Procedure Teacher Preparation Preview and become familiar with the iMovie app. Create your own 1 minute video as an example to guide students. Review the content for genetically acquired traits Sequence for SHIFT Movie portion -Introduce the performance task by showing the 1 minute sample movie -Class will watch the iMovie demo video (if needed stop at key points along the way and allow students to practice described iMovie features.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cssNpDOyoV8 Performance Task (1 minute movie depicting genetically transferred traits) Students will create with their group a 1 minute video which meets the following criterion: Title 60 seconds in length 3+ different transitions 3+ pictures Includes an interview Includes music/audio Includes credits Correctly represents a genetically inherited trait 1-Students will complete a story board (see template) before filming 2-Record needed footage 3-Edit and finalize movie 4-Show completed movie to class Strategies for Diverse Learners -Heterogeneous grouping (mix high and low achieving students) -Offer option to complete the assignment alone Extensions Movie: Include additional pictures, text, audio, and transitions Content: Create a one minute video for asexual reproducttion ASSESSMENT: Assessment Plan Pre-Assessment: Teacher led talk and argument about genetically transferred traits Formative: Creation of the movie script and story board Summative: Completion and screening of the movie Assessment Rubric – ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ Title 60 seconds in length 3+ different transitions A= 8/8 items completed 3+ pictures B= 7/8 items completed Includes an interview C= 6/8 items completed Includes music/audio D= 5/8 items completed Includes credits F= 4 or less/8 items completed Correctly addresses required science content
