Lab Instrumentation Training

MWWA has found the need to inform water industries professionals on the topic of Lab
Instrumentation training. This course will define the basic definitions of lab instrumentation. A review
of basic theories of each instrument including Colorimetric methods based on Beer-Lambert Law, Light
Scatter Methods and Electro-chemical Methods (i.e.,Probes). Attention will focus on proper operation
and common mistakes. Discussion on data management and reporting will be covered. A breakout
session will include demonstration and where possible hands on calibration of instruments, common
errors and trouble shooting. A tour of the Walter J. Sullivan Treatment Plant will be included.
Course objectives:

Basic theory for each basic instrument

Proper calibration and operation of instrument

How to manage data

Reporting to MassDEP
Students are expected to attend the entire class period, and to actively participate in problem solving
exercises. Those completing this seminar will be awarded 3.5 TCHs.

NOTE: Students need to bring calculator and engineering paper. Students need to wear proper
clothing and shoes (no open toe shoes or shorts allowed). Proper safety eyewear and gloves will be
provided. Lunch is included with this course.
ATTENDANCE POLICY: Participants must attend 90% of the program and complete a session
evaluation form to be eligible for TCHs.

From the North (Peabody area): I-95 S/MA-128 S. Take exit 44 to merge onto U.S. 1 S/Newbury St toward
Boston. Continue to follow U.S. 1 S. Partial toll road. Take the Massachusetts 3 N exit toward Massachusetts 28
S/Storrow Drive. Merge onto MA-3 N. Continue onto MA-28 S (signs for Storrow Drive W). Continue onto
Storrow Dr (signs for Storrow Drive West). Continue onto Soldiers Field Rd. Take the exit toward Central
Square/Massachusetts Turnpike/Interstate 90. Turn right onto Cambridge St. Turn left onto Memorial Dr.
Continue onto Gerrys Landing Rd. Continue onto Fresh Pond Pkwy. Destination will be on the left.
From the South/Southwest Area: Merge onto I-95 N via the ramp to Peabody/Portsmouth NH. Take exit 23-2425 toward Mass Pike. Take exit 25 for Interstate 90/Massachusetts Turnpike-Toll road. Keep right at the fork,
follow signs for I-90 E/Boston and merge onto I-90 E/Massachusetts Turnpike-Partial toll road. Take exit 18 on
the left toward Cambridge-Toll road. . Continue straight onto Cambridge St. Turn left onto Memorial Dr.
Continue onto Gerrys Landing Rd. Continue onto Fresh Pond Pkwy. Destination will be on the left
From the West RT2: Take MA-2 E/Cambridge Turnpike (follow all signs to Boston towards Alewife station).
Continue on MA-2 E. At the traffic circle, take the 2nd exit onto Concord Ave. At the traffic circle, take the 1st
exit onto Fresh Pond Pkwy. Destination will be on the right.
