Voluntary Sector Studies Network, Leisure Studies Association, and Voluntary
Action History Society
Day conference: 'Volunteering as leisure: leisure as volunteering'
Date: 4 June 2014
Venue: Sheffield University Management School
We are pleased to let you know that the next VSSN Day Seminar will take place in
Sheffield on 4th June, 2014: 10.30 - 4.30. Please put the date in your diary now!
Bookings will open once the programme is finalised, but submissions of abstracts
are invited now.
This seminar is a joint event between VSSN, Leisure Studies Association and
Voluntary Action History Society, which aims to bring together the different academic
communities and practitioners. Sessions at the beginning and end of the day will
explore the overlaps between volunteering and leisure over time, and synergies
between research questions. We are inviting abstracts for papers to fill the rest of
the programme. The day will include ample opportunities for networking.
Submitting an abstract
If you would like to propose a paper for the day, please submit an abstract of around
250 words with supporting references and a brief biography by email to Geoff
Nichols: g.nichols@sheffield.ac.uk no later than Monday 3rd February. Papers that
bridge the different study areas would be particularly welcome.
PLEASE DO NOT HIT THE 'REPLY' BUTTON to this message or you will be
replying to everyone on this VSSN list. Please note that, if selected, your abstract
will be posted on VSSN website.
For any other queries, or if you wish to discuss a proposed paper's suitability, please
email Geoff Nichols (g.nichols@sheffield.ac.uk), Angela Ellis Paine
(a.ellispaine@tsrc.ac.uk), Bob Snape (r.snape@bolton.ac.uk) or Meta Zimmeck
(meta@practicalwisdomr2z.co.uk)
We welcome presentations from researchers, academics, doctoral students and
practitioners in voluntary organisations (including infrastructure bodies and
foundations) who are doing research in areas relevant to volunteering/voluntary
action and leisure.
Your abstract should contain a question, problem or dilemma arising from practice,
theory or earlier research findings. Papers are usually based on completed or ongoing research (qualitative or quantitative) or a review of the evidence or literature.
Attending the event
VSSN aims to promote an understanding of the UK voluntary sector through
research. The event is aimed at researchers, academics, doctoral students and
practitioners in voluntary organisations or foundations interested in the UK voluntary
sector. We also welcome policy makers engaged in the voluntary sector. We are
always pleased to meet, and receive contributions from, colleagues from similar
settings in other countries who are involved in the field. The working language is
English.
The conference fee is £30 for members of VSSN, LSA or VAHS, £60 for nonmembers, £20 for concessions (members of VSSN, LSA or VAHS but with no
institutional support). Bookings will open once the programme is finalised, but
submissions of abstracts are invited now.
We look forward to welcoming you on the 4th June 2014.
Best wishes,
