DANUBENERGY: THE EUROPEAN TOUR OF THE PROJECT AND 'ARRIVING AT MANTUA Four workshops and an in-depth seminar will be free events that will crown the Italian leg of BlueCONRAD: the demonstration mobile prototype of European project DANUBENERGY funded by the CENTRAL EUROPE programme and applied to the protected natural areas of the Danube plain and to the other European rivers including the Po. Canoe Camp will be the venue provided by AGIRE for operations of the demonstration project proposal DANUBENERGY: to inspire conservation of natural habitats through the creation of a new high efficiency system for the use of cuttings management of these areas called IFBB (Integrated generation of Fuel and Biogas from Biomass). The project, coordinated by the Austrian Energy Agency of the Regions and conducted in Italy by the European Energy Agency AGIRE, will be active for 30 months in many parts of Central Europe where local partners have initiated research activities on specific potential of biomass available in protected natural areas: the purpose of the project is to co-operate territorially to identify the most efficient use of these bioresources in order to produce sustainable energy while providing economic resources for the preservation of the same habitat. The research will be conducted through the collection and comparison of rates of biomass from the different partner regions to be devoted to experimentation and analysis in a homologous plant, but at large-scale, already present in Baden Baden in Germany to the western border with France. Hence, within the design life of the partner regions will receive specific data on biomass and sent on their energy potential, as well as to initiate evaluations on the possibility of management of the areas supported by the technology benefits IFBB. Mantua, through DANUBENERGY, has the opportunity to become aware of a sustainable way to use so available riparian biomass those that constitute today for the managing bodies a large weight on its financial statements. The common reed, sedge, the Arundo donax, if it were once a great resource for the local economy linked, for example for its use in construction, for use in a packing case or artisans in strawing chairs, today, following the reduction or disappearance of these activities, these cuttings have become a disposal problem, moreover aggravated by the cost of collection and disposal. Not to mention that often this is sometimes accompanied by episodes of unauthorized burning which generate heavy consequences on the sustainability of the reserves on the nesting birds and in general on wildlife. The events of DANUBENERGY therefore will provide to protected areas managers, administrators of government agencies, enterprises, and to all the stakeholders, a window of knowledge about a scenario of sustainable management of these bio-resources as benefit of the preservation of natural areas instead increasingly threatened done by climate change.
