Workshop on
Campus-Community Partnerships for Advancing Sustainability
Date: Thursday, July 23, 2015
Time: 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Location: San Francisco State University
This U.S. Environmental Protection Agency sponsored workshop is designed to introduce universities
and communities to EPA tools for advancing sustainability, and to a successful Campus-Community
Sustainability Partnership (CCSP) model.
A CCSP is a framework where a university (campus) provides direct support to a city (or other local or
regional governmental organization) to implement priorities and projects from a cities’ own work plan
aimed at achieving sustainability and resiliency goals. As an example, San Diego State University
implemented the Sage Project http://sage.sdsu.edu/dus/sage/ based on the successful Sustainable City
Year Program framework http://sci.uoregon.edu/sustainable-city-year-program. The framework is based
around a partnership (typically one to two years) between a campus and a city in which existing
university courses are directed towards that city’s self-identified ‘real-world’ projects and plans.
CCSP programs enable local governments to reach their sustainability goals in an affordable manner
while transforming higher education into an arena where students learn through real-life problem
solving and develop valuable skills. The CCSP framework systematically matches local government
needs with university capacity in ways that benefit all parties, works within administrative structures,
and is at a scale that can have lasting and sustainable impacts for all involved.
The long-term objective is to establish partnerships that help communities become more sustainable
and resilient, build capacity, and provide university students with real-world experience.
