Position summary: The GIS/GPS Technician will use Trimble GPS equipment to collect
pipeline related features during construction of the Integrated Pipeline Project (IPL) pipeline in
support of the TRWD Real Time As-Built (RTAB) project. This position will be required to
coordinate with Senior GIS Analysts, IPL Project Resident Engineers, IPL Project Construction
Managers, and IPL Construction Contractors on-site to insure that all features are collected using
the Trimble GPS equipment before the features are covered with backfill material. Once features
are collected this position will QA/QC the collected data, synchronize collected features with the
TRWD Geodatabase, and prepare maps to document the collection.
Qualifications required:

Valid Texas Driver License

Bachelor’s Degree in GIS, Geography, Survey (Geomatics), Computer Science, or related
discipline;

Or, Associates Degree in Computer Science, GIS, Survey (Geomatics), or related field,
plus a minimum of one (1) year full-time hands-on experience in GIS-ESRI ArcMap and
survey grade GPS systems may be substituted for Bachelor’s Degree or Associates
Degree with the (2) years of experience.
Qualifications desired:

Has developed a proficiency in surveying and/or a particular field that permits them to
carry out basic assignments in that field with minimal assistance from the GIS Senior
Analyst and the Project Managers.

Proficient in the use of ESRI ArcGIS, Trimble, and Microsoft Office software with
experience and working knowledge of Trimble GPS equipment and the implementation of
that data into ArcGIS.

Professional certification in related field(s).
Essential functions and responsibilities:

Conducts GPS location and attribute collection of pipeline features during construction.

Utilizes Trimble RTK system to collect and transmit collected data to a Geodatabase.

Utilizes ArcGIS 10.x software to display data, edit data, and modify tables.

Responsible to conduct QA/QC on collected pipeline feature data.

Responsible to meet with the project Construction Manager and Resident Engineer on a
daily basis to coordinate and review GPS collection activities.

Conduct GPS hardware and software cleaning, maintenance, and system troubleshooting.

Manages tasks and projects as assigned by the Senior GIS Analysts.
Nonessential functions, skills and experience:

Troubleshooting and repair of GPS/GIS software problems.

Participate in the development and testing of desktop/field mapping applications.

Ensures GIS/GPS data is accurate, useable, and current.

Researches, evaluates, designs, drafts, estimates and oversees new construction, repair,
and maintenance projects as assigned.

Performs inspections and maintenance of pipeline features, as necessary and assigned.

May transport heavy equipment to and from job sites.

Responsible for daily vehicle checks and filling out work request forms if necessary.

Responsible for the general cleaning and maintenance of the equipment used.
Success factors/job competencies:

The employee must be able to work Monday through Saturday for 10 hours each day.

Experience and working knowledge of Trimble GPS equipment and the implementation
of the data into ArcGIS.

Must be at a level to perform a high percentage of tasks independently without the
assistance of the Senior GIS Analyst.

Must be able to conduct and prioritize several projects at one time.

Requires the ability to read, write and analyze problems such that accurate decisions can
be made relative to GPS collection within an active construction site.

Excellent analytical, problem solving, and communication skills.

Knowledge of and self-sufficient with the analysis processes utilizing ArcGIS.

May require working long or unusual hours.
