Published by M. Darly, 1778. The Lewis Walpole Library, Yale University W.S. Lewis was one of the foremost print and book collectors of the twentieth century. His collection relating to the British connoisseur Horace Walpole, housed in Lewis’s former home in Farmington, Connecticut, is now administered by Yale University. On Friday August 21st, members of the American Historical Print Collectors Society will have a rare opportunity to tour The Lewis Walpole Library and view British prints of America as well as a small collection of Currier & Ives prints that once hung in the Lewises’ private apartments. Lunch will be available and weather permitting, will be a picnic on the grounds. There is no charge for this program, but there will be a $20.00 fee for those who desire lunch. Following the meeting, members may wish to visit the Hill-Stead Museum, also located in Farmington, a short drive from The Lewis Walpole Library. Best known for its collections of French Impressionist paintings, the Hill-Stead Museum collection also includes a few late nineteenth-century American works by Whistler and Cassatt.
