SEEDS volunteers will be working on several projects, mostly construction and renovation related
tasks, preparing the area for the winter, after the busy summer season; helping a group of locals
developing the area with tourism services, pushing forward alternative ways of income; running
a series of huts in this isolated area, offering services to travellers in the summer. The tasks will
include landscaping around houses in the area as well as painting and maintaining verandas. As
the landscape is raw, the work is physically demanding but also rewarding. We will be
maintaining hiking paths, clearing litter along the paths and in the valley. We may also build
fences around natural hot pools in the area and clear some old fences. Some of these tasks may
have been fully accomplished by the group coming in the spring so we may take on new different
tasks in coordination with out hosts and depending on weather conditions.

We will be hosted in a local mountain hut; sleeping in shared rooms on mattresses on the floor;
please bring your own sleeping bag. The facilities are very basic and volunteers are expected to
show consideration for their companions. We will receive food ingredients and be in charge of
cooking and cleaning. Please do not forget some traditional food from your home country for the
international evening.

The Icelandic highlands, or “the interior”, are a true pearl to all nature lovers and outdoor
people. It is accessible on 4WD cars and most routes involve crossing un-bridged rivers. If you
really want to get away from it all, the interior of Iceland is like nothing you have ever
experienced. The mountainous centre of the island, with its rocky deserts, craggy mountain
peaks, ice caps, volcanoes, hidden valleys and hot springs, is an awesome and untouched
wilderness. The interior was almost totally inaccessible until recently. However outlaws managed
to hide out for years at a time in the highlands, rustling sheep and keeping away from lawabiding citizens. Folklore stories tell of both natural and supernatural beings that lay in wait for
unwary highland travellers. Travellers going between the north and south of Iceland sometimes
had to cross the highlands. To get to the assembly of Alюingi (parliament) each summer,
delegates had to ride from every corner of the country to Юingvellir in the southwest. Journeys
across the interior were never undertaken lightly; such travel was risky and lives were often lost.
Today the interior is crossed by two mountain roads, via Kjцlur and Sprengisandur, which are
only open in summer, after the snow has thawed in spring. We will be staying close to the glacier
Hofsjцkull and near to the rivers Hvнtб and Юjуrsб. The mountains in the area that reach up to
1500 m were formed during a volcanic eruption in the later part of the ice age. The area is still
dynamic and great geothermal activity takes place in the surroundings. The environment is very
diverse, both in shape and colour. The mountains are weathered and have very little continuous
growth, as the forces of nature, like glaciers, water flow, ice bursts etc. have been fast working
in these mountain highlands.

Participation fee EUR 200 (Euros). Please note that the fees are to be paid to SEEDS on arrival in
either Euros or Icelandic crowns. LANGUAGE: English will be the language of the camp; high
proficiency is not required. Volunteers need to be prepared for physical and demanding work,
free time activities are mostly outdoors in the area as there is no transportation available or
possibility to organise transport to different sites. Bring warm clothes, gloves, hats, scarves and
socks as the weather can be cold even in summer

Following several work camps organised by the association Vir’Volt in La Ferté-Alais between
2003 and 2006 and in 2013, the town council has once again asked the association to develop an
international work camp for the benefit of its community. The work camp relates to the council’s
wish to turn Saint Pierre’s church, which was first built in the 11th century but has been
abandoned for more than a hundred years, into a cultural space open to all of its inhabitants.
WORK
Due to its age and architectural interest, Saint Pierre’s church is protected by law and any
renovation work must be carried out using historically-accurate techniques. Last year’s work
camp cleared a plot of land behind the church, which used to be a garden. Under the guidance of
an expert architect, this year volunteers will use traditional techniques to rebuild two low stone
walls in order to mark the entrance to the garden.
ACCOMODATION AND FOOD
You will sleep in tents on the town campsite. Participants are required to bring along a sleeping
bag.
LOCATION & LEISURE ACTIVITY
Volunteers will have the opportunity to meet the local population and to explore their
surroundings. Nearby there is a regional natural park called Gâtinais, an educational farm and an
aerodrome. You will also be able to take advantage of events taking place in the local community
such as concerts or canoeing. Volunteers will be able to organise their own collective activities
depending on their wishes and the available budget.

Legambiente has been collaborating for years with the Park, local institutions and municipalities
to enhance the value of these important valleys with their historical richness, culinary traditions
and biodiversity. The camp will take place in a mountain pasture surrounded by fir woods.

Project: Host organisation is an organisation named "Europa-Jugendbauernhof" (European Youth Farm).
Work: The work will consist of rebuilding a former block of flats and farmbuildings and also the
surroundings into an 'European Youth Farm'. This year a former barn has to be renovated into a
"children-learning-place". The work also means for example to cultivate land, gardening, harvesting,
doing some renovation depending upon need. The time of work is 6 hours daily except Wednesdays and
weekends.
Accommodation: in a house nearby, with two sleeping-rooms (8 beds in each), kitchen, shower, toilet,
garden. Cooking, cleaning, shopping etc. will be done by the group itself.
Location: Deetz is a small village with approx. 800 inhabitants in the Bundesland Sachsen-Anhalt; it is
located 50 km south-east of Magdeburg. It is also not far away from Berlin. The house where the group
will live is situated near a lake. Swimming is possible. It is at the edge of a nature reserve.
Terminal: train station Zerbst; within reach from Magdeburg or Berlin; next airport Berlin.

Neskaupstaрur is a medium size town by Icelandic standards. With its 1.420 inhabitants, it has
the largest population in the East Fjords. The town has been growing and prospering since the
early 1900ґs and is almost completely self sufficient thanks to the fishing industry. Sitting in the
middle of nowhere, away from other villages and communities, the town is equipped with all the
necessary facilities and stores: a bakery, a local dairy, supermarkets, banks, a post office, a
school, a sports hall, a swimming pool, a church, a hospital, a harbor, a airstrip, a hotel, a jazz
club, a rescue centre, etc. As a matter of fact, it has all the services and professionals you would
expect in a larger town, with the exception of an optician! On the east side of town the wildlife
reserve and a large recreational area facing the ocean. In the lower section of the reserve, called
Hagi, lies the famous Pбskahellir (Easter Cave), a rock vault over the shore. Holes left by thick,
10 to 12-million-year-old tree trunks can be seen inside the vault and, in true Icelandic spirit,
various folk tales are associated with the cave. Neskaupstaрur can be reached only driving
through a one-way tunnel over the highest year round pass in Iceland. Eistnaflug is a Heavy
Rock Festival which this year will present its 5th edition. More than 40 bands will perform for an
expected audience of about one thousand visitors. It will take place July 9-12. For additional

We will help the organizers of the festival to carry out different tasks. For example, we will take
care of the venues before and after the concerts, control the access to the festival area and
prepare the camping site. We will assist the local organization in keeping the area clean during
the festival. We will also do some environmental work in cooperation with the local community
before and after the festival.

We will be staying in a house owned by the local community in Neskaupstaрur / Eskifjordur
offering basic facilities. Mattresses will be provided and everyone is asked to bring his/her own
warm sleeping bag. We will take showers at the local swimming pool and sports centre near by
the house. It is possible that we will also stay in tents for one or two nights during the festival
just to get the right spirit. The food will be supplied for the duration of the work camp and
everyone is expected to do his/her fair part of the cooking/cleaning. It would be nice to try new
and different dishes, so please remember to bring along recipes from your own countries.

Worldwide Friends volunteers have free access to the local geothermally-heated swimming pool
in Eskifjцrрur. Traditionally, natural pools have played an important social role in Icelandic
culture. Most Icelandic pools offer indoor and outdoor swimming, as well as hot tubs and saunas
or steam rooms. WF Iceland will also organise reasonably-priced weekend excursions to some of
the most popular, beautiful areas and natural wonders that Iceland has to offer. Excursions
include unique Icelandic sights such as lagoons, waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas,
glaciers, lava forests, hot-springs, rhyolite mountain ranges or steam-vents.. Volunteers will also
have free access to the concerts during the festival.
