Patient Safety Visiting Fellowships
Purpose
The Armstrong Institute Patient Safety Fellowships build organizational capacity in
improvement, and develop implementation science and improvement skills of staff and
clinicians to lead patient safety efforts. The Armstrong Institute offers choice of 4-month
or 9-month fellowships, in three fellowship cohorts per year:

Tuition
Fellows are responsible for all travel and living-related expenses. Tuition is: 4-month cohort,
$8,000 USD; 9-month cohort, $14,000 USD.
Objectives
The JHM Armstrong Institute Patient Safety Fellowships include a structured patient safety
and quality curriculum: 1) a mentored project in quality and safety, 2) a practicum
experience with Johns Hopkins quality and safety groups, and 3) participation in didactic
educational lectures and experiences. Fellows will be assigned to a faculty mentor, and will
participate as a cohort with other Patient Safety Fellows in a variety of learning activities.
Tracks
All Armstrong Institute Patient Safety Fellows will have a focus on reducing preventable
harms, improving patient outcomes and experience, and/or improving value. Within that
framework, Fellows may choose between two tracks, focused primarily on applying
implementation science and improvement to hospital operations, or participating in a
research agenda. Applicants should select apply for an operations or a research track:

Applicant Eligibility and Criteria
Applicants will be selected based on experience and commitment to patient safety and
quality improvement; ability to become a leader in the field and continue to improve care;
and analytical and communication skills. All applicants must:
 Have 3+ years’ work experience as a clinician or administrator. Background in
patient safety or quality improvement is a plus.
 Demonstrates basic computer skills, working in a Windows environment.
(Familiarity with the following programs a plus but not required: Microsoft Excel or


Access, or a statistical package STATA or SPSS).
Be proficient in oral and written English, and have excellent communication skills.
Have a “passion” to impact patient safety or quality improvement, with promising
interest in applying practice to improve healthcare.
Application Procedure

2. Complete the application and current CV.
3. Submit a 350-word essay describing your qualifications for this Fellowship that
includes your current position, abilities, leadership experience, and skills as well as
how this Fellowship will fit into your professional goals. Essays longer than 350
words will not be accepted.
4. Submit a professional letter of reference from your current supervisor, or a recent
supervisor.
5. Send application, current CV, and essay to: The Armstrong Institute
(armstronginstitute@jhmi.edu). Deadline for all application materials and
reference letter:
- October cohort start (4- or 9-month cohort): May 20
- January cohort start date (4-month cohort): September 23
6. Applicants meeting all requirements will be contacted to set up a phone or
Skype interview with at least one Armstrong Institute staff member.
7. Final selection will be endorsed by the Armstrong Institute’s leadership team and
announced at least 2 months prior to the cohort start date.
This program does not qualify for F-1 or J-1 student sponsorship. Legal Permanent
Residents and non-immigrants, who are otherwise physically present in the U.S. and in a
status that allows for full or part-time study, may pursue this program. Foreign nationals who
do not meet the criteria above are not eligible to participate.
