John has been shown how to approach a horse on the ground in a safe manner but will be reminded every time he is in contact with a horse. Remind John to be gentle. John gets excited with the goats and wants to chase them as it is exciting to see them run. Supervise John and remind him to be kind-that sometimes the goats play chase with each other and sometimes they will want to stand and eat. 3 Cooking, Eating Drinking Choking hazard scalds, hygiene risks and kitchen utensil risk. Food allergies. John has no additional chocking risks or known allergies Staff will handle hot water for tea, coffee and soups. John brings his own packed lunch or may have a small lunch such as soup and bread, toast, sandwiches prepared on site. Remind John to wash hands before eating or drinking John can safely handle hot beverages and foods for his own consumption but will be observed to reduce hazards. Any injuries to be reported in communication book and accident book. Fire and Smoke Show John what to do and where to go if there was a fire Smoke free premises- smokers stand at the farm gate. John may have new medical conditions that we are not aware off. General Vulnerable adult risks All money handling is observed and receipts are taken to be passed to care staff. Visitors to farm are restricted and interactions observed. E.g. parcel delivery, vets etc At handover staff ask care workers/ parents/John about Johns health, and his communication diary is checked daily for information. If there any concerns about John’s health, care staff/parents are to be informed/consulted, even if John says he is fine John is kept on the inside of kerbs with a staff member between him and the road. Staff to support John when in shops with discretion and respect. John does not smoke but may want to stand with others who do at the gate. Smoke breaks are under staff supervision Make note in John’s diary if he seems ill, and notify his care staff. Hazardous substances Hazardous substances in use are -Kitchen area. Cleaning materials under sink -Toilet area. Toilet cleaners are next to toilet. -Louse powder is used on the chickens. - Rat poison is not used on the farm -Creosote is used on a number of wooden posts and fences - Topical spray weed killer is occasionally used on the farm. John is reminded that kitchen cleaner and toilet cleaner are to be used by staff only. Animal treatments are non-harmful to humans and are only applied by staff. If weed killer has been used notify John of when it has been used so he avoids touching plants in that area. Manual handling John may get musculoskeletal problems, e.g. back pain from handling heavy and/or awkward objects. Staff will move all objects larger than 10 Kgs. When alone in a room with others ensure door open. Avoid unnecessary touch. Allow John to interact socially with others but keep him under observation to keep him safe. Intervene when appropiate Make a note in the communication diary if John has been in contact with any potentially hazardous substances and inform staff. Remind John to tell staff if manual handling of certain objects causes a problem, and not to lift anything over 10Kgs John likes to hug but will be encouraged to shake hands instead. John can use hammers, saws, screwdrivers, and mucking out tools such as wheelbarrows, brushes, shovels and forks. John Does not use powered tools. The heaviest tool John can use is a manual 2 lb hammer. John will be under supervision at all times when using tools. John has some small manual tool experience, but he will still be reminded of risk and safe handling each time. Any injuries to be reported in communication book and accident book. Weather John can work outside in all weathers but there are additional risks to be handled Hot weather- sunburn, dehydration Cold weather-cold, ice risk, slips Wet weather- cold+additional slip risk Appropriate clothing (inc footwear) worn for the weather. John reminded to wear layers so he can adjust his temperature. Sun block can be used by John. Frequent hydration breaks in hot weather. Hot drinks available in cold weather. John reminded of increased slip risks in wet weather. Zoonoses Animal to human disease. Risk of ill-health from contracting diseases from animals. John to wash hands after contact with animals, and especially before eating, drinking (or smoking). All Ill animals are treated by vet and if there is any human risk are not contacted by service users. Talk about weather and how we feel. Encourage self help and encourage him to say if too hot/cold. Encourage to keep gloves on but allow choice and enable learning. John can help when safe to do so to look after a sick animal as this is a great way of learning to care for others. John has helped wash a hens foot when she had a cut but remind him we only do that when we need to. Page 4 of 4
