Division 1
Sports Report
The draw for the first round of the Beeline Trophy was held at the Nag’s Head on
Wednesday and, as the Leisure Cruisers are not taking part in this year’s competition, they
were invited to make the draw. The results will be published shortly.
Division 1
As we reach two thirds of the way through the season, Strand and Deliver are proving to be
more invincible than ever. Les Grosmonts travelled to Eardisley this week and, although
they went down fighting, they did go down. 4 - 2 was the score.
Peterchurch was the scene of a much needed return to form for the Nag’s Head. Second
place Leisure Cruisers had lost two of their last three matches, but that is now three losses
from four. They retain second place, while the Nags move up one.
The biggest surprise of the week, if not the season, came when I opened Tracy Adams’
always prompt email from the Nomads. Portway ‘A’, who have undeniably struggled this
year, clearly found the Tillington “groove”, because Richard Nicholas, Ryan Nicholas and
Rob Connell all won two games each. As a result, Nomads went down 5 – 1 at home.
It is not too late for Portway to do some damage in the league, so watch out!
In a match that was actually played on 27th May, Sundowners gained revenge for their first
round loss against Stars on 45, winning 4 – 2. Although she is one of our younger players,
Katie Powell is proving to be well worth her place. Two wins for her.
Division 2
There has been a change at the top of Division 2 this week. Tram Tracks and Portway Golds
have been slugging it out all season and it is the turn of the Tracks to take the lead.
Although there were some fairly close games, Yew Tree ‘A’ were unable to resist, losing 4 –
2.
The reason for the change at the top was Portway Golds’ first draw of the season.
Michaelchurch Bridge were the visitors and the result was that rarity in petanque, a true
draw. The final score was 3 - 3, 60 – 60. As already mentioned, it costs Golds their top slot.
The Bridge of Kentchurch slipped a little this week when they visited the Wheels of the
Tram. Molly and friends were clearly on good form, taking a 5 – 1 victory.
This result enabled the Bullringers to close the gap, when they beat Tram Sleepers 4 – 2.
Division 2 is far from being a done deal, with only five points covering the top four teams.
A little further down the table, the Barristers entertained Yew Tree ‘B’ at the Temple Bar car
park. A 4 – 2 win sees them climb one place up the table at the expense of the Tram
Sleepers.
