St. James the Great Fr. Paul Hughes St. James’ Presbytery 40 Underwood Rd. Hattersley, Hyde. SK14 3DH Tel 0161 368 3618 Maccpaul@aol.com In St. Anselm’s Local Pastoral Area Parish Newsletter The Body and Blood of Christ - Year C 2nd June 2013 First Reading Genesis 14:18-20 Melchizedek, King of Salem, Priest of God Most High blesses Abraham and offers him bread and wine, an act which prefigures the Eucharist. Melchizedek is seen as the forerunner of the eternal priesthood of Jesus. Second Reading 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 The earliest account of the Institution of the Eucharist: This is my body … This cup is the new covenant in my blood …. do this as a memorial of me. At every Mass we are obeying Jesus’ command to: do this … Gospel Luke 9:11-17 This feeding miracle pointing to the institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper. In a lonely place the Twelve recognise the crowd’s need for food, but they have only five loaves and two fish. Jesus took the five loaves and two fish …. said the blessing over them, then he broke them … and the scraps filled twelve baskets. As this food supplied the people’s physical needs, so the Sacred Eucharist supplies our spiritual needs. We should all strive to ensure that we partake of this heavenly banquet as often as possible. It’s a gift beyond price. We pray for all of our sick especially Fr. The Body and Blood of Christ The only-begotten Son of God, wishing to enable us to share in his divinity, assumed our nature, so that by becoming man he might make men gods. Moreover, he turned the whole of our nature, which he assumed, to our salvation. For he offered his body to God the Father on the altar of the cross as a sacrifice for our reconciliation ; and he shed his blood for our ransom and our cleansing, so that we might be redeemed from wretched captivity and cleansed from all sins. Now in order that we might always keep the memory of this great act of love, he left his body as food and his blood as drink, to be received by the faithful under the appearances of bread and wine. How precious and wonderful is this banquet, which brings us salvation and is full of all delight! What could be more precious? It is not the meat of calves or kids that is offered, as happened under the Old Law; at this meal Christ, the true God, is set before us for us to ea. What could be more wonderful than this sacrament? No sacrament contributes more to our salvation than this; for it purges away our sins, increases our virtues, and nourishes our minds with an abundance of all the spiritual gifts. It is offered in the Church for the living and the dead, so that it may be beneficial to all, as it was instituted for: the salvation of all. Finally, no one is capable of expressing the delight of this sacrament, through which the sweetness of the Spirit is tasted at its source, and the memory is celebrated of that surpassing love which Christ showed in his passion. So, in order to imprint the immensity of this love more deeply in the hearts of the faithful, at the Last Supper, when the Lord had celebrated the Pasch with his disciples & was about to pass from this world to his Father, he instituted this sacrament as a perpetual memorial of his passion. It fulfilled the types of the Old Law; & was the greatest miracle he worked; and he left it as a unique consolation to those who were desolate at his departure. Prayers after Holy Communion Act of Faith: O Jesus, I believe that I have received your Flesh to eat and your Blood to drink, because you have said it, and your word is true. All that I have and all that I am are your gift and now you have given me yourself. Act of Adoration: O Jesus, my God, my Creator, I adore you, because from your hands I came and with you I am to be happy for ever. Act of Humility: O Jesus, 1 am not worthy to receive you, and yet you have come to me that my poor heart may learn of you to be meek and humble. Act of Love: Jesus, I love you; I love you with all my heart. You know that I love you, and wish to love you daily more and more. Act of Thanksgiving: My good Jesus, I thank you with all my heart. How good, how kind you are to me. Blessed be Jesus in the most holy Sacrament of the Altar. Act of Offering: O Jesus, receive my poor offering. Jesus, you have given yourself to me, and now let me give myself to you: I give you my body, that I may be chaste and pure. I give you my soul, that I may be free from sin. I give you my heart, that I may always love you. I give you every breath that I shall breathe, and especially my last, I give you myself in life and in death, that I may be yours for ever and ever. O Lord Jesus Christ, You who have given us Your precious Body and Blood to be our meat and drink, grant that through frequent reception of You in the Holy Eucharist, I may be strengthened in mind and body to do Your holy will. Who live and reign with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Magnificat My soul glorifies the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God, my Saviour. He looks on his servant in her lowliness; henceforth all ages will call me blessed. The Almighty works marvels for me. Holy his name! His mercy is from age to age, on those who fear him. He puts forth his arm in strength and scatters the proud-hearted. He casts the mighty from their thrones and raises the lowly. He fills the starving with good things, sends the rich away empty. He protects Israel, his servant remembering his mercy, the mercy promised to our fathers, to Abraham and his sons for ever.
