3rd Grade News January 23, 2015 Week in Review Spelling – This week we incorporated some Core Knowledge vocabulary in the spelling list. The kids learned about the prefixes reand un-. Reading – Most of the students continued to independently read biographies this week. As an entire group, we also read some Norse Mythology. The students read Baldur, Sif and Her Godlen Hair, and The Punishment of Loki. Next week we will begin reading Native American legends. Writing – The students began a new writing topic this week. Their task is to write an original myth using one of the Norse gods or goddesses. This is the first narrative the students have written this year, so it will be a long and thorough process. Math –This week we had lessons on finding missing addends, subtracting 2-digit numbers, writing numbers to 1,000 using words, and adding and subtracting multiples of 100. History – We completed our unit on the Vikings this week. The students learned about Leif Ericson, Norse gods and goddesses, and they practiced writing using the rune alphabet. The kids also took the unit test. Next week we will begin a new history unit on early Native Americans. During this unit, we will also learn a little about our local Native history and culture.
