districts; districts asking for advice on how to roll out process to other schools
in district)
 Gender – 50/50 (excited about this as a STEM, afterschool program)
 UPDATE – MDE talked to Texas about adding the “other” category to
application
 Ethnicity – Hispanic count is a huge issue at WSU and healthcare industry;
Don Neal working on initiative to address this
 998 of the 1117 received free/reduced lunches
 Overall excited and happy about C2P progress this program year
o 3D Printers
 Printers and scanners arrived Monday; one at each site; one at CoN
 Teachers/SCs trained on Monday
 Printers already being utilized
 August – bring MakerBot in to give in depth training
 Goal Next Year – first class of Explore It, Design It will build 3D printers for
each one of their science teachers
 SCs are starting to gather parts; only thing we will have to buy is
extruder ($90)
 Students will actually build the printer, huge for linkage
 Printers used this summer for programming
 Day teachers have really stepped up to assist SCs with printer
 Principals very excited about aligning day school and after school activities
 Julianne Bjarnesen – are the printers available to the entire school?


●
Yes – using to develop relationships between day school teachers and
afterschool program
 Julianne Bjarnesen – afterschool students could be mentors to both
teachers and non-C2P students to use the printer
 Printers can print wood, glass, etc by switching out a part
 Rick Samulak – are they expensive to operate?
 Most expensive piece is the extruder
 Filament is $100 for 10 spools
 As expensive to run as an actual printer
 Cost of actual printer – at sites $2300 a piece (negotiated)
 Cost of actual printer – at CoN $5800 (negotiated)
 Julianne Bjarnesen – can we get a demonstration?
 Yes – printers will be functional and used during summer
programming
 Download app on mobile device to watch print job while operator is away
from printer
 Latest in medical industry – students with SIDS, 3D printers can produce a
stint that can be placed and dissolve in three years to prevent children from
dying
 Almond Miller – using a 3D printer is a marketable skill to utilize during
interviews
Certified Nurses Aide Course
o In Ecorse – CNAs are entry level health care employees
 Taught by CoN faculty member at school
 7 students, 7 parents participating
 Designed so that seniors who are graduating in June will also receive CNA
certificate
 Ecorse is all over the program; partnered with school and school is utilizing
SIG grant to help pay for course
 Great way for students to find out if they really want to work in the health
care industry
 If it works, there is interest in the program from other schools
 Ties into both our family engagement component as well as our mission

NEW BUSINESS
●
MDE Updates
○ Attended the Summer Summit on May 8th
■ Typically geared for elementary; Don Neal and staff
found this particular summit very helpful
■ Badges – students learn outside of the school; a
student who can build a robotic probably shouldn’t have to go through basic
math
● MDE is looking at working with an
organization that can award “badges” to students for certain skills
● Badges would be attached to
transcripts and display/move towards CCR
●
●
■ Don Neal volunteered to be a guinea pig – attached
badges to our curriculum
● Could help with retention in program
■ Get credit for things outside the classroom
■ Credibility issue?
○ Coding
■ MDE codes enrichment offerings to show what we
are doing as a program
■ Been working with MDE to determine the best way
for our program to code
■ Subjective process as one person reads enrichment
titles and determines what to code the enrichment as by the name of the
enrichment
○ ESEA – before Congress
■ Initial concern was that 21stCCLC was in peril of being
included in block grants
■ Last thing to come out from Senate committee was
that 21st CCLC would maintain its status
■ According to US Department of ED – worst case
scenario is that the 5 year grants would carry out
○ ADA
■ Meeting in Lansing next week to determine where
ADA is going for next year – based on funding?
Curriculum Review
○ STEM Sleuths – Approved
○ Improv presented at Summer Summit – two programs have requested
to use it; we will share but programs have to supply us with post survey results
■ Julianne Bjarnesen – potential to sell? Don Neal
looking into it

●
●
●
presenting – Pharm providing link; gala will start with strolling dinner at 5pm;
AHEC helping out with green room activities
■ Awards – scholarships, judges awards  business
opportunity
○ Call sponsors something else next year – Warrior Champion?
■ Marie Bristow – show presentation of winning group?
○ If partners want to want to offer teachers (participating) a luncheon,
we can arrange it
C2P STEM/Replicator Lab Initiative
○ Signing contract today
○ 7 rooms, $500,000 worth of lab equipment
○ Life Sciences building
○ Separate but links to 21st CCLC initiative
○ Worked with HS teachers to develop their ideal lab – a lot of HS
teachers said they would take a FT to WSU to utilize
■ Free of cost to C2P schools
■ Cost to non C2P schools for sustainability
○ Open six days a week – on Saturdays might be running a class for
merit badges
○ Goal – 4-5 years we have a student that is going to the national
Science Fair
○ As you throw away stuff….give it to Don Neal
○ Using this summer on a limited basis; grand opening in September
○ Julie Bjarnesen – private funders may be interested in stocking lab
○ Exclusively for high school and middle school students
○ Forensics – Pharm has certificate program – students may need extra
projects; Jessie working on this….
National Workforce Diversity Pipeline Program Grant Initiative
○ Detroit Southwest initiative
○ Separate than 21st CCLC – targets Hispanics, African Americans
○ Separate cohorts yearly (5 year), 35 students, selected by the
community group
○ 2 Saturdays a year
○ Underrepresented students and pushing them into a health career
○ Hire an academic navigator – role of Tansi
2015/2016 Program Calendar
○ Proposed
○ Shows meeting dates, university closure dates, term dates
■ Before each term – there will be a Saturday
curriculum training on Saturdays
■ 5th Term – Drop In – Principals said that students
need help at the end of the year with finals
●
●
● Only available to students who have
attended the program throughout the school year
● No enrichments running during this
time
● May have field trips
○ Dr. Matthews – concern with dates for summer next year – medical
students start earlier (July 1)
○ AMA on campus this year in August – can we connect summer
programming with it?
■ If Dr. White-Perkins has connections, let us know
○ Needs key
2015/2016 Curriculum Map
○ 21st CCLC big on voice and choice – but there is too much of lag
getting these going at some of our sites hence the curriculum map with voice and
choice embedded
○ Created map out of a need for consistency
■ Maps will go to print this summer to aid in marketing
