MINUTES OF MEETING Date and time: May 13th, 2015 Location: College of Nursing, Room 117 Participants: Don Neal, Tansi Leake, Amanda Horwitz, Robert Hellar, Dr. White-Perkins, Linda Zaddach, Almond Miller, Marie Bristow, Julianne Bjarneseon, Dr. Matthews, Rick Samulak Steering Committee Meeting Summary of discussions and detailed decisions The meeting started at: 9:00 am REPORTS Reviewed Meeting Minutes from March – no changes General Program Updates Numbers/Demographics Current registration – 1117 students Dinners served – 22572 served since October (free, fully reimbursable to districts; districts asking for advice on how to roll out process to other schools in district) Gender – 50/50 (excited about this as a STEM, afterschool program) UPDATE – MDE talked to Texas about adding the “other” category to application Ethnicity – Hispanic count is a huge issue at WSU and healthcare industry; Don Neal working on initiative to address this 998 of the 1117 received free/reduced lunches Overall excited and happy about C2P progress this program year o 3D Printers Printers and scanners arrived Monday; one at each site; one at CoN Teachers/SCs trained on Monday Printers already being utilized August – bring MakerBot in to give in depth training Goal Next Year – first class of Explore It, Design It will build 3D printers for each one of their science teachers SCs are starting to gather parts; only thing we will have to buy is extruder ($90) Students will actually build the printer, huge for linkage Printers used this summer for programming Day teachers have really stepped up to assist SCs with printer Principals very excited about aligning day school and after school activities Julianne Bjarnesen – are the printers available to the entire school? ● Yes – using to develop relationships between day school teachers and afterschool program Julianne Bjarnesen – afterschool students could be mentors to both teachers and non-C2P students to use the printer Printers can print wood, glass, etc by switching out a part Rick Samulak – are they expensive to operate? Most expensive piece is the extruder Filament is $100 for 10 spools As expensive to run as an actual printer Cost of actual printer – at sites $2300 a piece (negotiated) Cost of actual printer – at CoN $5800 (negotiated) Julianne Bjarnesen – can we get a demonstration? Yes – printers will be functional and used during summer programming Download app on mobile device to watch print job while operator is away from printer Latest in medical industry – students with SIDS, 3D printers can produce a stint that can be placed and dissolve in three years to prevent children from dying Almond Miller – using a 3D printer is a marketable skill to utilize during interviews Certified Nurses Aide Course o In Ecorse – CNAs are entry level health care employees Taught by CoN faculty member at school 7 students, 7 parents participating Designed so that seniors who are graduating in June will also receive CNA certificate Ecorse is all over the program; partnered with school and school is utilizing SIG grant to help pay for course Great way for students to find out if they really want to work in the health care industry If it works, there is interest in the program from other schools Ties into both our family engagement component as well as our mission None OLD BUSINESS Discussion of College/School Needs form C2P o Anything that we can do to help you be successful, that is our goal so let us know – support and data collection ● Student Career Interest Survey Update/Results o Any students within the HS took survey: top 3 careers, top 2 hobbies o Ask Amanda for data needs Give a couple of days to pull actual names since info is based on district IDs o Breaks down any health, business careers o Send out master list of careers to partners If a career is not listed, please let us know o Next year hoping to administer survey at open house at beginning of the year o Julianne Bjarnesen – are students resurveyed at the end of the year? No – just administer at the beginning so we can use the list all year to help recruit Julianne Bjarnesen – wondered if after going through the program, student interests change? Pick up those answers on post surveys and through next year’s career interest survey Student Daily Planner (2015/2016) o Customized this year o Tool for C2P staff to communicate with day school staff o Hoping to teach students how to manage time o Resource for our students: policies, important dates, subject resources Any info you have and want included in the planner, let DN know by June 1st – just shoot us your dates (open house, informational meetings, application dates) Planner runs September 1st – August 31st o Including health related months, days Get dates/planner info to Don Neal by June 1st NEW BUSINESS ● MDE Updates ○ Attended the Summer Summit on May 8th ■ Typically geared for elementary; Don Neal and staff found this particular summit very helpful ■ Badges – students learn outside of the school; a student who can build a robotic probably shouldn’t have to go through basic math ● MDE is looking at working with an organization that can award “badges” to students for certain skills ● Badges would be attached to transcripts and display/move towards CCR ● ● ■ Don Neal volunteered to be a guinea pig – attached badges to our curriculum ● Could help with retention in program ■ Get credit for things outside the classroom ■ Credibility issue? ○ Coding ■ MDE codes enrichment offerings to show what we are doing as a program ■ Been working with MDE to determine the best way for our program to code ■ Subjective process as one person reads enrichment titles and determines what to code the enrichment as by the name of the enrichment ○ ESEA – before Congress ■ Initial concern was that 21stCCLC was in peril of being included in block grants ■ Last thing to come out from Senate committee was that 21st CCLC would maintain its status ■ According to US Department of ED – worst case scenario is that the 5 year grants would carry out ○ ADA ■ Meeting in Lansing next week to determine where ADA is going for next year – based on funding? Curriculum Review ○ STEM Sleuths – Approved ○ Improv presented at Summer Summit – two programs have requested to use it; we will share but programs have to supply us with post survey results ■ Julianne Bjarnesen – potential to sell? Don Neal looking into it Summer Program Update ○ Closed Nursing Today – have 89 registered ■ Going to SIM Lab to ask if another week can be added ■ Amanda Horwitz updated numbers registered for all camps ■ Dr. White-Perkins – asked about clarification with payment for Engineering Camps ● Don Neal – explained the scholarshiping process ■ Teacher program – approved for 58 SCECHs ○ Marie Bristow – next year include AHEC programs ○ Gala – mark calendar for August 6th ■ Working with marketing this year – videoing presentations (20) on day of the gala; parents will know times students are ● ● ● presenting – Pharm providing link; gala will start with strolling dinner at 5pm; AHEC helping out with green room activities ■ Awards – scholarships, judges awards business opportunity ○ Call sponsors something else next year – Warrior Champion? ■ Marie Bristow – show presentation of winning group? ○ If partners want to want to offer teachers (participating) a luncheon, we can arrange it C2P STEM/Replicator Lab Initiative ○ Signing contract today ○ 7 rooms, $500,000 worth of lab equipment ○ Life Sciences building ○ Separate but links to 21st CCLC initiative ○ Worked with HS teachers to develop their ideal lab – a lot of HS teachers said they would take a FT to WSU to utilize ■ Free of cost to C2P schools ■ Cost to non C2P schools for sustainability ○ Open six days a week – on Saturdays might be running a class for merit badges ○ Goal – 4-5 years we have a student that is going to the national Science Fair ○ As you throw away stuff….give it to Don Neal ○ Using this summer on a limited basis; grand opening in September ○ Julie Bjarnesen – private funders may be interested in stocking lab ○ Exclusively for high school and middle school students ○ Forensics – Pharm has certificate program – students may need extra projects; Jessie working on this…. National Workforce Diversity Pipeline Program Grant Initiative ○ Detroit Southwest initiative ○ Separate than 21st CCLC – targets Hispanics, African Americans ○ Separate cohorts yearly (5 year), 35 students, selected by the community group ○ 2 Saturdays a year ○ Underrepresented students and pushing them into a health career ○ Hire an academic navigator – role of Tansi 2015/2016 Program Calendar ○ Proposed ○ Shows meeting dates, university closure dates, term dates ■ Before each term – there will be a Saturday curriculum training on Saturdays ■ 5th Term – Drop In – Principals said that students need help at the end of the year with finals ● ● ● Only available to students who have attended the program throughout the school year ● No enrichments running during this time ● May have field trips ○ Dr. Matthews – concern with dates for summer next year – medical students start earlier (July 1) ○ AMA on campus this year in August – can we connect summer programming with it? ■ If Dr. White-Perkins has connections, let us know ○ Needs key 2015/2016 Curriculum Map ○ 21st CCLC big on voice and choice – but there is too much of lag getting these going at some of our sites hence the curriculum map with voice and choice embedded ○ Created map out of a need for consistency ■ Maps will go to print this summer to aid in marketing ○ Forces planning – SCs need to have map to Don Neal by end of the month ■ Some things are non-negotiable ■ Work with building principals in determine best electives ○ Brochure goes to print in July/August ○ Community Ed book – in the front will be sites specific plan ○ DPW – do students have access to CPR/FA training? ■ In CNA course STEM Sleuth curriculum approved by committee KUDO’s / POINTS OF PRIDE ● Received 2015 Outstanding Community Based Organization for Southfield Schools ● Several students and staff nominated for Exploring Awards – banquet on May th 20 ● None PARTNER NEWS / UPDATES ● None ● None SUGGESTIONS FOR NEXT AGENDA ● None ● None The meeting ended at: 10:45 Minutes compiled by: A.
