Internal Post Assessment Moderation Checklist
A guide to completing successful post assessment moderation.
Use this Checklist to provide additional guidance on what to look for when conducting an internal postassessment moderation on assessment decisions made by assessors within your organisation.

Before you begin:
Have you been supplied with the following documents?
 The latest version of the NZQA Unit Standard printed off from the NZQA website
 The assessment task (to be given by trainee/used by the assessor to collect evidence)
 Model answers (if a knowledge-based assessment task)
 Marking Schedule Evidence and Judgment Statements)
1. Read the NZQA unit standard and check:
 Unit number
 Unit version - is it current?
 Unit Title
 Special requirements
 Outcomes and Evidence Requirements (E.Rs)
2. Check you have an unused copy of the assessment to refer to if necessary:

3. Check the trainee assessment booklet has:
 Correct unit number, version, title
 Assessment record has correct unit number, version, title
 Space for trainee’s name, course, date, observation sheet, photos (as applicable)
 Final result is indicated (i.e. Achieved/Not Achieved)
 Date of final result is indicated
 Appeal - yes/no is indicated
 Assessor’s signature
 Trainee’ signature
 Outcomes and E.Rs have been verified by the assessor (e.g. ticked)
 Check header and footer on the page are correct

4. Assessment brief - read this and check that it gives candidates an overview of:
 The tasks involved in the assessment e.g. 10 written questions and 2 observations. Observations will
be done by the assessor/supervisor.
 The Outcomes and E.Rs related to each assessment task are recorded, current and correct.
5. The assessment tasks - check that there are tasks to assess:
 The E.Rs, range and hence outcomes
 Are worded clearly and correctly
6. Judgement and evidence statements/model answers - check these are:
 On hand
 Current- i.e. Outcomes, E.R.s, judgement statements, evidence statements, read model answers and
highlight key points to be looked for in candidates' assessments.
7. Marking of the assessment - check:
 The assessor has ticked/crossed each answer or parts of answers, not sections or large chunks of
work. Marking is clear.
 The assessor has used the judgement/evidence statements/model answers when marking to ensure
they have marked in a fair, consistent and valid manner.
 Moderator agrees with the assessor’s decision of “Achieved” or “Not Achieved”
 Go back to the Assessment Record and check the outcome has been recorded correctly
8. Re-sits - check these have been recorded in a different coloured pen:
 Clearly indicated e.g. a cross, by the assessor
 Resubmit sheet has been used correctly
 The revisit by the candidate has been recorded on the resubmit sheet
 Resubmit is marked, signed and dated by the Assessor
 Assessment Record sheet shows that there was a re-sit and is dated by the associated E.R. and is
then changed to “A” and dated.
 Assessment Record shows “Not Achieved”, which is then crossed out neatly, and “Achieved” circled,
initialled and dated by the assessor.
