Off-Campus Housing

Off-Campus Housing
Gone are those days when the only place to find an apartment was at the back of a
newspaper. While they say that ignorance is bliss, moving cross-country can be stressful,
particularly when you don’t know much about the city where you’re moving. Doing a pre-arrival
online research can benefit you a lot. Fortunately, we have covered that part for you. Here is a
list of all the off-campus housing which can make your transition even smoother. But before we
jump to all the pros and cons of each housing community, you need to ask yourself a few
questions. Do you want a single or a multi-bedroom apartment? Do you have any specific
roommate requirements, like gender or ethnicity? If you still haven’t found any Hokies to share
your apartment with, don’t worry! There are tons of people who are looking to sublease their
apartments. Just join the Housing group on Facebook and you’re good to go. Here is an
additional tip for all the newbies: Even if you’re in the solitude-monger category, having a
roommate can cut down your utility cost a lot. Most of the apartments do not include internet,
cable, water and electricity charges in the rent. You have to pay for them separately. Once again,
this is for most of the apartments, NOT all. The rent plus the utility cost gets divided among the
roommates. The more, the merrier! Of course, you can do the math.
Almost all the housing communities provide you with similar facilities with a variation of
one or two features. All of the off-campus housing will include one or more of the following: A
swimming pool, a fitness center, or a common playground like a basketball court. It is the
location that matters. Mostly all apartments are non-furnished with an exception of a few. Some
apartment communities offer an optional furniture package that you can rent. But it is just a short
term benefit. Buying second-hand or even new furniture is really not that expensive, and you can
always sell it off after your graduation. Simply go to the Free & For Sale group on Facebook and
join the rat race of outshining other people by selling/buying cheap furniture. That being said, let
us now walk you through the various Off-campus housing communities here at VT.
