Year 12 students are required to make decisions about this. What is career decision-making? Career decision-making isn’t magic. It is a process during which you develop some job ideas, explore them and prioritise them. It is a complex process. Many factors must be considered (e.g. your interests, values, abilities). There are also many influences on the decision (e.g. what your parents and friends think, availability of jobs). How do I develop job ideas? You probably already have some ideas (don’t discount those ‘dream’ ideas!). You can develop more ideas by doing a questionnaire – examples of these can be found in the My Guide section of the myfuture website at http://www.myfuture.edu.au and the Career Quiz section of the Job Outlook website at joboutlook.gov.au. Use the Bullseye Posters on the myfuture website at http://www.myfuture.edu.au/Assist%20Others/Activities/Bullseye%20posters. aspx to explore jobs related to your favourite school subjects. Your guidance officer/counsellor or career adviser can help you develop your job ideas list. How do I explore my job ideas? Use your research skills. Read about the jobs on your job ideas list – use myfuture (The Facts section) or the Job Guide (http://www.jobguide.deewr.gov.au). Talk to people already in the jobs (go prepared with questions). Try the job – see your guidance officer/counsellor or career adviser about doing work experience. As you can see, career decision-making requires some effort; but aren’t you worth it? 6 Cour se and Institution Update s A science experience at the University of Queensland (UQ) If you are in Years 10 – 12, the Experience Science 2013 program at the UQ Gatton and St Lucia campuses provides an opportunity to find out what it is like to study science at UQ. What is the difference between a certificate, a diploma and a degree? In Australia we have a national system of qualifications called the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). Depending on their education level, secondary students can apply for the following qualifications from the Framework: Bachelors degree Associate degree/Advanced diploma Diploma Certificate IV Certificate III Certificate II Certificate I. 20 These qualifications can differ in length, content and competitiveness as shown in below. Bachelors Degree o Length - Usually 3-5 years full-time* o Content -Theoretical o How Competitve - Entry is usually competitive Associate degree/Advanced diploma o Length - Usually 2 years full-time* o Content -Combination of theory and practice o How Competitve - Range from not competitive to very competitive, depending on the topic Diploma o Length - Can be 1-2 years full-time* o Content -Tend to be practical with some theory o How Competitve - Range from not competitive to very competitive, depending on the topic Certificates I, II, III, IV o Length - 1 month - 1 year full-time* o Content - Usually very practical o How Competitve - Usually not competitive The different levels of qualifications on the AQF are a bit like a ladder. You can use one level to help you gain entry to a higher level of study in the future depending on your results and the rules of the institution to which you wish to gain entry. To decide on the best level of qualification for you, consider:* The course will take longer to complete if offered on a part-time basis. •the study/training requirements of your occupational goal •your previous study results •whether you are a hands-on (practical) or theory person •the cost of the course •the length of time you are prepared to study. For more information about the AQF and its qualifications, visit http://www.aqf.edu.au. What is UMAT and do I have to sit for it if I want to study medicine?
