We teach a full range of English language courses to preparatory, undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as offering community programmes. We also offer all our students the opportunity to learn a variety of second foreign languages. Our School is an accredited training centre for Cambridge ESOL, and an accredited examination centre for a number of international exams, including IELTS, TOEFL IBT, LCCI, TOLES and City & Guilds. If your Placement Exam result is below Intermediate level, you study at the Preparatory School until you complete Intermediate level successfully. 25 REMEMBER! Placement Test is given twice a year for the new registered students. It is a test of 100 hundred multiple choice questions and is 120 minutes. You can download the sample exam questions from the http://sfl.emu.edu.tr. If you want to study at the right level, please answer only the questions that you know the answers. If not, you may start your education at the English Preparatory School at a false level. PROFICIENCY TEST English Proficiency Exam tests your listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. You can take this exam at the beginning of Fall and Spring semester. REMEMBER! You can download the sample exam questions from the http://sfl.emu.edu.tr. If you get 50 or 60 and above (see the important information below, the exemption criteria), you can study in your department. Please don’t forget to check your department’s requirement for English. If successful, these students are required to sit the EMU FLEPS English Proficiency Test. 27 197) (183: IMPORTANT INFORMATION 1. *Students can enroll on ENGL191-192 courses if they decide to take the EMU FLEPS English Proficiency Test and score minimum 60%. 2. Two choices are given if a document certifying that a student has successfully completed the English Preparatory Program at another university or if a student is exempted from another English Preparatory Program (the validity of the document will be evaluated) is presented: a) Take ENGL181-182 courses. b) Take the EMU FLEPS English Proficiency Test and enroll on ENGL191-192 courses if the student receives a score of minimum 60%. ( If not, students will have to take ENGL 181 and 182 courses. Since ELT Department program does not entail ENGL 181 and 182 and ENGL 191 and 192 courses, this decision is not applicable to ELT students. They need to get minimum 60 % in order to be exempted from English Preparatory Programs). 3. The exemption for the following faculty and three departments is minimum 60% on the EMU FLEPS English Proficiency Test: Faculty of Pharmacy Department of Psychology Department of Translation and Interpretation Department of English Language Teaching 4. **The exemption for the Faculty of Medicine is minimum 70% on the EMU FLEPS English Proficiency Test** (60-69% range need to take a separate Speaking Exam). 28 ABBREVIATIONS IELTS: International English Language Testing System. It is an international standardised test of English language proficiency. TOEFL IBT: The TOEFL iBT test measures students’ ability to use and understand English at the university level. And it evaluates how well a student combines his/her listening, reading, speaking and writing skills to perform academic tasks. TOEFL PBT is administered in a paper-based format. The TOEFL iBT test is desired by universities because it measures all four communication skills — reading, writing, listening and speaking. TOEFL CBT: The Computer-Based TOEFL has four sections: Listening, Structure, Reading and Writing. GCE: General Certificate of Education IGCE: International General Certificate of Secondary Education UCE:Uganda National Examinations Board Certificate of Education rk ation. It make the City & Guilds: City & Guilds International ESOL and Spoken ESOL (SESOL) are communicative English tests focusing on all four language skills (Writing, Reading, Listening and Speaking). They are internationally recognized for both academic progression and employment. LCCI: LCCI International Qualifications from Pearson are among the best recognized and most highly regarded business-related qualifications in the world. The qualifications include vocationally-related qualifications that cover the key areas of business, as well as language and teaching qualifications. 29 The qualifications are available as single subjects or diplomas and group certificates and are available at different levels across the following subject areas: English Language Financial and Quantitative Marketing and Customer Service Business, Administration and IT WAEC: The West African Examinations Council WASSCE: The West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) is a type of standardized test in West Africa. It is administered by the West African Examinations Council . It is only offered to candidates residing in Anglophone West African countries. You must score at least 60 out of 100. 1) SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT Summative assessment has two achievement tests, one in-term speaking exam, two quizzes and a final exam (cloze, listening, reading, writing and speaking). The total weight of the summative assessment is 75%. ACHIEVEMENT TESTS Achievement Tests are administered at the end of modules 1 and 2. You should visit the secretary to write a petition for the make up exam. j) Make-Up Exams You can sit make-up exam for achievement tests, in-term speaking exam and final exam. If you miss an exam, you must submit a written petition explaining the reason for your absence within three working days. If you miss the make-up exam, you don’t have the right to take another make-up exam. k) Feedback Period After the exam results are announced (achievements and quizzes), you get feedback on your exam performance during the feedback period. l) Objection to Exam Results If you are not happy with your exam results, you can object to your exam results by the end of the feedback period. After the feedback period, objections will not be considered. After you write a petition, you should give it to the secretary. You can learn your exam result, o from the SFL webpage or o by visiting the secretary. Changes in exam results are announced within 2 working days after the last date for objection. 53 m) Period of Study and Leave of Absence (Freezing Registration) You can complete English Preparatory School in a minimum of one semester (if you start from 103 or 104 level) or maximum two academic semesters (if you start from 101 or 102 level). For all levels, the number of lessons per week is 24+1 (one compulsory hour in the Student Self Study Center).You can go to the Student Self Study center at other times, in order to develop your language knowledge and skills and learning. You may have a leave of absence minimum 1 and maximum 4 semesters. You can make an application online (from your portal). n) Renewing Registration The registration period is announced in the Academic Calendar. To complete your registration, you should pay attention to the following points: o go to the bank and pay the school fee. o Your account will be opened in 24 hours. o Enter your student portal to confirm your registration (your registration will be completed) Step 1: Go to your student portal Step 2: Choose Academic Step 3: Click on “Preparatory School Registration Authorization” Step 4: Click on “Confirm” Important Note: Unless you confirm your registration on your portal during registration period, your registration will be incomplete. You can buy your photocopy card from the library. 54 q) Summer School If you cannot successfully complete Intermediate level by the end of the Academic Year, o you can attend summer school to complete this level. o If you want to complete other level, you can also register. In the summer school, you can complete only one level. If you complete Intermediate level in Summer School, you can sit the Summer School Proficiency test. r) Surveys and Evaluations At the end of each semester, you can evaluate your performance, teachers, program and SSSC.
