If your departmental style guide is APA 6th edition, then the table of contents for your
thesis/dissertation should be set up like the example above. Note that you will follow the
UWF Thesis and Dissertation Guide for your chapter headings. Consider everything that
follows the chapter heading to be a Subsection. Follow the APA 6th edition guidelines for
your subsections.
If your paper has one subsection, use APA Level 2 (see APA Manual, p. 62).
If your paper has two subsections, use APA Levels 2 and 3 (see APA Manual, p. 62).
If your paper has three subsections, use APA Levels 2, 3, and 4 (see APA Manual, p. 62).
If your paper has four subsections, use APA Levels 2, 3, 4 and 5 (see, APA Manual, p. 62).
Do not bold or italicize the headings in the Table of Contents. Use title case for Level 2
headings and sentence case for Levels 3, 4, and 5 in the Table of Contents.

INTRODUCTION
Each Chapter Heading (e.g., Chapter I. Introduction) should be centered and in all caps. Do
not bold or italicize the chapter heading. See sample chapter pages in the UWF Thesis and
Dissertation Guide.
Applied Personality Research
APA Level 2
Level 2 headings are flush left, bold, and title case.
APA Level 3
Aviation research. Level 3 headings are indented, bold, sentence case, and
end with a period.
APA Level 4
Planes. Level 4 headings are indented, bold, italicized, sentence case and end
with a period.
