From the Coordinator
Hi all Treeforce members and friends,
Thank you for the very warm welcome back to Treeforce and welcome to the 2014
Tree Planting season!
This year we have plans to revitalize Treeforce and have already got off to a great start with a
Bunnings sausage sizzle to raise funds, and a Redlynch Central Shopping Centre information
stall to drum up some keen volunteers.
‘ two activities 540 trees were planted by volunteers with a few new faces turning
Over the first
up each time. The Cairns Regional Council has been very supportive by providing us with trees,
pre-dug holes and some maintenance, so a big thanks to Russell, Dave, Lisa and the rest of the
reveg team.
On the 2nd of March we held a Clean Up Australia Day’ activity starting at the top of Rice’s Gully
on Redlynch Intake Rd (where we planted in 2009), then proceeded down the headland to
Freshwater Creek for a lovely walk through the forest. Eventually we emerged into a clearing
where 100 trees were waiting for us to plant them, as well as a well-earned morning tea.
When sorted, we found that we had collected 5 normal Clean Up bags and 6 bags of
recyclables. Most of the rubbish was found trapped at the loco bridge on Rice’s Gully and just
downstream from there, where the water had obviously slowed down. You will find the sample
results of 2 of the bags on the next page.
It was a great chance to show our newcomers that our dream of a revegetation / wildlife corridor
from the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area through Rice’s Gully, Freshwater Creek, Barron River
to the Great Barrier Reef, is quite achievable with trees growing to a height of 5m or more in 5
years. Regards, Lisa 
WE NEED VOLUNTEERS!
Remember….The tree planting season only
runs between January and June so we need
you NOW to help us plant trees. If you have
been thinking that you might like to come along

Earth Hour 2014 - Sat March 29 Earth Hour was founded by
WWF in Sydney in 2007 and has now been embraced by 7001 cities and
152 nations across the globe. In 2014, Earth Hour will focus attention on
one of the world’s most iconic and threatened places: Australia’s Great
Barrier Reef. This year they are launching a special Earth Hour television
event with Channel Ten to reveal the true story of what’s happening to the
Great Barrier Reef due to climate change and more. Then we’ll turn out our
lights to make a stand for our reef.
What we will be doing…..
Treeforce invites you to do something hands-on for climate
change and the Great Barrier Reef for Earth Hour. Join us to
plant over 400 trees near Freshwater Creek from 3-5pm then
celebrate with a BBQ before going home to watch the
special TV event & turning your lights off at 8.30pm. A time
to reflect the real effects of climate change on the Great
Barrier Reef. The world will be watching!
