Presenter Biography: Lawrence Chen, Ph.D. is a consulting and clinical psychologist with over 20 years of experience providing psychotherapy, supervision, consultation, and training in Asia, USA, and Europe. Dr. Chen is a Board licensed psychologist in the state of California in the United States and a Registered Clinical Psychologist with the Hong Kong Psychological Society. He is a member of the China Mental Health Association and the Hong Kong Psychological Society. He is fluent in English, Cantonese, Mandarin, and Shanghainese. Dr. Chen is an expert in treating traumatic stress and bereavement counseling. He is Board Certified in Bereavement Trauma, Board Certified Experts in Traumatic Stress, Diplomate and a Fellow at the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress. As an European Accredited EMDR Consultant and Trainer, he supervises and trains mental health therapists in Asia in the practice of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing), the treatment of choice for PTSD and trauma related issues. Dr. Chen has helped many individuals, parents, and families manage crises and work through stressful situations. He has provided consultation services to school personnel, health care professionals, government agencies, and community and religious leaders in crisis intervention. He has been involved with various international efforts to help disaster-stricken regions. An author, Dr. Chen’s books are well-received, including “Saying goodbyes” (Heart Publishers, HK, 2004) and a professional book “Bereavement Counseling” (The China Light Industry Press, Beijing, 2006) With extensive experience in working with children, adolescents, parents, and families worldwide, Dr. Chen is recognized as a leader and a mentor. As team leader and clinical supervisor at the Asia Pacific Family Center in Los Angeles, USA, he worked closely with schools, social workers and judicial agencies. Noted for his professional insights and acumen, he has been supervising and training teams of mental health professionals in Hong Kong, mainland China, Taiwan, and Macau for over a decade. Dr. Chen served as the Director of the Comfort Care Concern Group during the late 90’s providing professional bereavement courses and training to the community. He was an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Chinese University of Hong Kong Medical School. Dr. Chen collaborates with other professionals such as psychiatrists, medical doctors, and social workers to deliver multidisciplinary services. A seasoned and dynamic public speaker, he is also frequently invited to give talks to the general public, schools, religious communities and corporations. In addition to clinical work, Dr. Chen is dedicated to building up leaders. A Master Personal and Executive Coach, he has worked closely with multinational corporate leaders and decision makers in developing strong leadership and teamwork. Recognized for his psychological and organizational insights and cultural sensitivity, he has been contracted as a senior coach and trainer to various Fortune 500 companies. He has also served as a consultant to religious communities on leadership development. Dr. Chen coaches parents and other individuals who want to achieve peak performances in their professional, relational, and family lives. Webinar Description: According to the Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange, the largest number of international students at colleges and universities in the United States come from China (Institute of International Education, 2013). In this webinar, the presenter will provide a brief overview of the current demographics of Chinese international students in the United States as well as provide participants with information about the specific counseling needs (Liu, 2009) of this growing population of international students.
