School Goals
2014-2015
Goal 1: Ensure every student achieves academic proficiency by the end of each
grade level on assessments designed to measure a relevant and rigorous curriculum.
Reading Benchmarks:

















Provide staff development for our new student information system (Infinite
Campus).
Implement an online gradebook using Infinite Campus and adhere to Augusta
County’s grading philosophy for consistent reporting of academic achievement.
Continue to implement and use Universal Screenings and Fall, Winter, and Spring
Assessments to identify areas of strength and weakness to drive instruction.
Continue to use data from formal and informal assessments to form small flexible
groups and provide for differentiated instruction.
Expand upon use of balanced literacy to differentiate instruction using the Daily
5/Café strategies by attending staff development provided by the county, peer
observations, and a school wide book study.
Conduct staff development through a book study The Next Step in Guided
Reading to increase comprehension using more rigorous standards.
Provide staff development for support staff with literacy strategies to assist
differentiated group instruction in order to better meet the needs of students.
Implement literacy centers based on the major components of a literacy diet:
phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary.
Monitor closely the implementation of basic literacy skills by utilizing PALS data,
including quick checks to assess student progress.
Effectively use the assistance of PALS Aide for literacy instruction.
Provide teachers with additional support staff during literacy blocks in the master
schedule.
Provide Power-Up time and support for intervention, remediation, and enrichment.
Use the TLC After School Program for additional intervention or remediation by
qualified staff.
Focus on research based strategies to increase the academic success of students
with disabilities. Strategies may include the implementation of a Co-Teaching
model between the Special Education teacher and the regular classroom teacher, a
more teacher directed reading program such as ERI/IRI or Corrective Reading, and
support from the IEP team, Intervention Specialist, and Title I teacher.
Continue to provide common planning time for teachers at all grade levels.
Continue to hold data driven monthly RTI meetings to discuss student progress.
Implement an extended planning time for grade levels to discuss curriculum
alignment, core instruction, pacing and curriculum guides, power up groupings,




etc. Administration and/or Intervention Specialist will attend these meetings
monthly.
Continue writing specific and measureable goals for students in need of
interventions through RtIM Direct.
Conduct reading walk throughs and disaggregate data to plan for any additional
staff development.
Continue a school wide focus on literacy a book recommendation slide show in the
office and using the “What Staff is Reading” bulletin board in the cafeteria.
Include teacher tips for improved literacy learning in the weekly Mustang Memo.
Math Benchmarks:

















Continue to implement and use Universal Screenings and Fall, Winter, and Spring
Assessments to identify areas of strength and weakness and drive instruction.
Continue to use data from formal and informal assessments to form small flexible
groups and provide for differentiated instruction.
Provide teachers a 90 minute math block in the master schedule.
Implement math workstations similar to the Daily 3.
Focus instruction on the 5 Easy Steps to a Balanced Math Program: Mental Math
and Computation, Problem Solving, Conceptual Understanding, Mastery of Math
Facts, and Common Formative Assessments.
Provide teachers and students with resources that focus on a concrete, pictorial,
and abstract approach to math.
Encourage students to solve problems in a variety of ways and promote
understanding of mathematical processes.
Incorporate “Mental Math” into daily math instruction.
Create a “Math Lab” for grades K-5th focusing on remediation and enrichment.
Focus on research based strategies and or programs to increase the academic
success of students with disabilities. Strategies may include the implementation of

Goal 2: Provide a positive and inviting atmosphere where all stakeholders are
appreciated and respected while supporting student learning and assuring the school
is free from drugs, weapons, and disruptive behavior.
Benchmarks:


















Effectively use components of Infinite Campus to ensure safety of our students by
collecting attendance twice per day.
Effectively use components of Infinite Campus to communicate positive behavior
referrals as well as other rewards such as perfect attendance, bus awards, Mustang
of the Month, etc.
Continue to maintain a safe school climate that focuses on positive relationships
through our effective school-wide discipline plan and maintain our “Mustang
Motto” ~ Be Responsible, Be Respectful, and Be a Good Learner.
Provide school wide rewards to encourage total buy-in of our school discipline
plan.
Recognize students who display the school behaviors with a Mustang of the Month
board in the cafeteria.
Monitor student attendance closely and implement recognition and celebrations
each 6 weeks for students who are at school each day, on time, and stay for the
entire instructional day.
Recognize students for academic achievement on report cards (Honor Roll) and
SOL testing.
Provide an anti-bullying program organized by the school counselor and other
school staff.
Develop a peer mentor program for students needing additional positive support.
Update crisis intervention plans and provide staff development/training for all
codes, procedures, and policies.
Work with our school resource officer to collaboratively plan and implement
safety checks.
Conduct a minimum of 20 weekly classroom walkthroughs.
Encourage teachers to share best practices and conduct peer observations with our
staff as well as district model staff.
Encourage positive acts and accomplishments by providing a staff bulletin board
(“Let Your Light Shine”) where positives can be shared. Random drawings for
prizes will be selected for those who provide or receive notes of encouragement.
Celebrate staff with a bulletin board highlighting a collaborative team effort.
Provide information, share school highlights, and provide teaching tips through a
weekly Mustang Memo.
Empower staff by using a “team” approach to interviewing and hiring.
Celebrate student and staff birthdays.




Continue to complete monthly safety drills and reports.
Continue to maintain an active school based wellness committee and integrate
wellness instruction across the curriculum that includes daily movement embedded
into core instruction.
Continue to offer students and staff healthy snacks.
Continue to offer students Friday food bags as part of a grant program through the
Blue Ridge Food Bank.
Goal 3: Strengthen high student achievement through community and parental
collaboration and promote internal partnerships to improve student learning,
operational effectiveness, and customer service.
Benchmarks:
















Continue parent communication, including home visits, positive contacts by
phone, and attending student events outside of school.
Continue sending the “Mustang Memo” that keeps staff “in the know” by sharing
upcoming events, instructional tips, and celebrations.
Provide school newsletters to all families as well our school board and board of
supervisor representative for Craigsville.
Provide opportunities for communication among staff members via weekly team
meetings, monthly RTI meetings, and email.
Continue to foster partnerships with our CCSO, local colleges/universities,
BMMS, civic, church, and community organizations.
Work with the town of Craigsville to positively promote our school by having
students lead the Pledge of Allegiance at Town Hall Meetings.
Lead and assist community projects through our Student Council Association.
All teachers/staff will maintain an up to date website with relevant information
pertaining to their classroom activities/instruction.
Communicate information to parents via CRES newsletters, the school webpage,
and Infinite Campus calls, texts, and/or emails.
Continue meetings between grade levels and among feeder schools to ensure
successful student transitions from one grade to the next as well as one building to
the next.
Develop strong relationships and connect with parents by conducting an open
house at the beginning of the year.
Provide parent training of the new Infinite Campus Parent Portal by having open
Computer Lab nights.
Encourage parent involvement with the CCSO by offering student centered
programs at meetings at least three times this year.
Provide support to the CCSO and elicit more support from parents to assist the
CCSO President and Board.
Hold literacy and/or fun nights where families can come and learn more about our
school programs.
Notice and recognize volunteers for their service.


Communicate student progress and news through the use of progress reports,
report cards, parent conferences, Infinite Campus calls, webpages, Friday Folders
and teacher newsletters.
Work with Buffalo Gap High School to develop a mentorship program with high
school students assisting with the elementary school.
Goal 4: Incorporate 21st century skills to increase student academic proficiency and
empower educators to integrate technology and use data to inform, facilitate, and
implement instruction.
Benchmarks:












Encourage collaboration using our new ITRT as a resource for lesson planning,
enrichment opportunities, co-teaching, Infinite Campus support, and other
resources.
Continue to share Google Documents and effectively use Google Drive.
Implement the use of a Google School and Substitute Calendar to assist with
communication amongst staff.
Continue to obtain necessary equipment and access in order to utilize technology
throughout the curriculum in all settings.
Increase the use of technology in our building and provide staff development from
the county technology resource staff with specific focus on our IPads and Google
Nexus devices.
Continue the use of RTIM Direct to manage data collected from assessments
administered to children. Use benchmark assessments and universal screenings to
monitor student progress.
Continue to utilize SMARTboards, student hand-held devices, and the computer
lab for instructional delivery.
Teachers will design at least one formal lesson plan demonstrating the integration
of students using technology.
All teachers are expected to maintain up to date websites.
Provide staff development to expose all levels to Technology Enhanced Items on
standardized testing.
Model and emphasize safe, responsible use of technology to support curricular
goals for students and teachers.
Offer a math lab experience to all students in Kindergarten through 5th grade with a
predetermined computer lab time.
