Counseling and Mental Health Continuing Education
Fall 2012 Workshops
Offered through the Department of Counseling, Administration, Supervision and
Adult Learning
Ethics Responsibilities When Clients Threaten Suicide or Harm to Others
Virtually all mental health professionals experience times when clients appear dangerous to themselves
or to others. In fact, these situations have been identified as some of the most stressful that therapists
encounter. This workshop will assist mental health professionals in identifying their ethical duties when
such circumstances arise. It will also offer guidelines for responsible care, consultation and
recommendations for documentation of the assessment of risk and treatments. A therapist’s rights and
responsibilities when clients threaten them will also be addressed.

DSM-5 and Supervision Issues: Proposed Changes, Controversies and Supervision

released in May 2013, many clinicians and supervisors are wondering what to expect in the new manual.
This workshop provides an overview of the DSM-5 revision process and changes for supervisors as well as
highlighting key supervision issues and possible ways to approach them. The 6-hour format is designed to
meet the supervision requirement for Professional Clinical Counselors, but the content is also appropriate
to psychologists and social workers.

Ethics, the Internet and Social Media: Challenges and Opportunities for Mental Health Professionals
Younger clients and community-based clients are seeking online contact with mental health care
providers at an increasing rate. Online media offer the promise of increased efficiency and effectiveness
of therapeutic services, supervision of trainees, and peer consultations. However, they also present risks
to both client and professional. In addition to the practical concerns about the security of the technology
and the problems with misunderstanding of any text-based communications, there are uncertainties
about the effectiveness of these innovative interventions (especially when used in the absence of fact-toface contact). The diligence with which mental health professionals protect client confidentiality and
conduct appropriate informed consent is also an area of concern.
This workshop explores the ethical and legal responsibilities of mental health professionals in use of
technology for treatment, follow-up, peer consultation, and supervision experiences. Current standards,
guidelines, and regulations will be analyzed and applied to vignettes drawn from practice, along with
discussion and response to questions by Dr. Welfel.
