Achievement First North Brooklyn Prep Elementary School understands there is a need to improve the way we use energy to become more energy efficient. We are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our activities and to ensure that we are using energy wisely within our school community In order to achieve this we will: Appoint an energy monitor/green champion to promote, support and ensure energy saving activities are happening around the school. Administer training during staff professional development days on energy efficiency and sustainability. Communicate the importance of reducing energy in the school to all staff and pupils via staff memos, student memos, and grade-level assemblies. Assign sustainability monitors for each classroom. This scholar’s responsibility will be to: o Ensure that lights are turned off when the classroom is not in use. o Ensure that the projectors and document cameras are turned off when they are not in use. o Ensure that the air conditioners are turned off when they are not in use and ensure that they are only used during the appropriate season. o Ensure the air conditioners are set to the appropriate setting when in use. Remove extra extension cords once electrical upgrades are complete to make sure that extra appliances are not being used in classrooms. Expand the schools ‘switch off’ policy to include switching off lights during the day and not just after the school day ends. Ensure that refrigerators, microwaves, coffee makers, toaster ovens, radios, etc. are only used in shared staff spaces. Conduct weekly random walkthroughs to ensure that personal appliances are not being used throughout the school. Consider the energy reduction course for the upcoming school year.
