Mission
Campus Compact advances the public purpose of college and universities by
deepening their ability to improve community life and to educate students for civic
and social responsibility.
Vision
Campus Compact envisions colleges and universities as vital agents and
architects of a diverse democracy, committed to educating students for
responsible citizenship in ways that both deepen their education and improve the
quality of community life. We challenge higher education to make civic and
community engagement an institutional priority.

Iowa Campus Compact Board
Presidents of all member campuses serve on the Iowa Campus Compact Board.
Seven of those members serve as the Executive Committee. While the board
generally only meets annually, the Executive Committee meets quarterly and
handles most business. Executive Committee members are elected to three-year
terms and the Board Chair serves one year as chair and one year as Past Board
Chair.

Program Advisory Council
Each member campus selects at least one faculty or staff member to serve on
the Program Advisory Council. This council meets at least quarterly to network
and share ideas as well as set the direction and work plan for the compact.

Iowa Campus Compact Programs
Iowa Campus Compact AmeriCorps Program (ICAP)
• Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service and Corporation for National and
Community Service partnership
• Iowa Campus Compact member campuses can apply each year for slots (in
the summer for slots beginning in October)
• 130 college students serving 300 or 450 hours of service in their campus
community
• Upon satisfactory completion eligible for $1,132 or $1,415 education award
for tuition or eligible student loans
• Education-award only program (no stipend)
Program Goals:
 Increase capacity and meet needs of local nonprofits particularly in areas
of education, health, economic opportunity and environmental
stewardship.
 Increasing students’ sense of civic responsibility and connections in local
Iowa community
 Increase rate of college student volunteerism in Iowa
 Assess impact of volunteering on likelihood of staying in Iowa and level of
civic engagement

Iowa Campus Compact VISTA Community Corps
• Partnership with Corporation for National and Community Service
• 14 full-time VISTA members serving at sites across the state of Iowa
including member campuses and community partner nonprofits
• 20 Summer Associates at various sites
• Potential campus and community sites can apply for VISTA positions within
our project
• Provide training, program management and administration of VISTA project
• Cost-share required
Program Goals:
 Increase the capacity building of campus relationships with community
partners
 Mobilize volunteers to meet pressing community needs

Strengthen local communities through new partnerships and marshal
financial resources

2011-2012 Webinar Series
For the 2011-2012 academic year, Iowa Campus Compact is partnering with
Minnesota, Kansas and California Campus Compact to provide even more online
professional development opportunities. Look for a complete schedule of fall
webinars soon, on topics including:
 Community outcomes assessment
 Service-learning in online courses
 Partnering to support rural community development
 Turning assessment projects into publications
 Mobilizing campuses to address hunger
All webinars this year will be offered at a discounted rate for Iowa Campus
Compact members ($30 for members, $60 for non-members).
Next webinar: Service-Learning in Online Courses: Practical Considerations and
Strategies

This webinar will explore challenges related to the integration of service-learning
and online education by using a decision tree model that asks key questions
based on individual goals and experience. Webinar participants will:



Compare traditional service-learning courses with online courses and
pinpoint options presented by both the challenges and opportunities
Identify multiple paths to online service-learning
Examine options for identifying and engaging service sites


Look at ways to overcome logistical challenges
Explore unique opportunities that online service-learning may offer

Faculty Development Workshop: Strategic Partnerships in ServiceLearning
Wednesday, February 15, 2012
11:00 am to 1:00 pm
Loras College
Iowa Campus Compact member faculty is invited to participate in this free
workshop for Campus Compact members (lunch will be provided). Presenters
will discuss two successful models of strategic partnership to help attendees gain
insight on:
 the meaning and purpose of building strategic partnerships in servicelearning and civic engagement
 strategies for developing and sustaining partnerships
 faculty, staff, community partner and student role in building these
partnerships. Attendees will also have the opportunity for group
discussion (discipline-specific where possible) on their own challenges
and opportunities incorporating this approach
Presenters: Dr. Charles Connerly, University of Iowa Professor and Director of
the School of Urban and Regional Planning and Maggie Baker, Loras College
Service Learning Coordinator.
