2014 SAD-ADSA Tourist Stops
Below is a list of possible locations you can visit on your way to the 2014 SAD-ADSA which is being held
at The Ohio State University. Please contact the farm/company (except Amish country) in advance to
schedule a time.
**Please be aware of biosecurity as you visit farms and plan to bring plastic boot covers, as well as your
own trash bags, to help prevent the spread of disease**

Land of the Living, Ayars Family Farms
The Ayars farm consists of 1,000 acres of conventionally-grown corn, soybeans, and hay, their
main focus has always been dairy farming. 150 cows are milked, both registered Guernsey and Brown
Swiss, and the Guernsey milk is used to make homemade ice cream right on the farm. They have been
visited by many dairy judging teams over the years for their high genetic merit dairy cattle. The farm is
located about 35 minutes from Columbus.

Twin Oaks
The Verhoeven family emigrated from the Netherlands to Ohio in 2002. They started the dairy
operation in 2003 with about 700 cows and have grown to 1250 cows today. The farm is located about
40 minutes from Columbus.

Miedema Farms
The Miedema family emigrated from the Netherlands to Ohio in 2002. They are currently
milking 850 cows in a 2x16 parlor. The heifers are raised off site. Miedemas’s have 4 row freestalls with
a sorting gate. A flush system is in place along with a manure separator.

Waterman Dairy
The Waterman Dairy Center is located on the main campus of The Ohio State University in
Columbus. Waterman has a 3-fold purpose: teaching, outreach, and research. Undergraduate and
graduate students have access to the farm and animals through opportunities in classes, research, and
employment. The dairy farm exists on 167 acres of the complex. Two managers coordinate all aspects of
this over 100-Jersey-cow herd in the heart of Columbus. Cows are milked in a double-eight Delaval
herringbone parlor built in 2002 and housed in a free-stall barn. The herd is ranked in the top 25% of the
breed for JPI.

Fair Oaks
Fair Oaks is committed to educating the public about modern farming efforts, but they also are
committed to protecting the environment, caring for the animals, and ensuring the highest quality
products possible. They have both a cow and pig facility. Therefore, the energy used for the entire
facility operates from the generators than burn methane from the digesters with cow and pig manure.
Around 80 to 100 calves are born in one day at Fair Oaks.

Golden Oaks
Golden Oaks is a registered Holstein farm located in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. They
strive to efficiently and profitably produce both a quality dairy product and superior cattle genetics,
while maintaining the integrity of agriculture in a suburban setting.

Van Deurzen Dairy
The Van Deurzen Dairy is the largest dairy farm in Ohio with about 4,500 cows. It uses a 100-stall
rotary parlor and they milk about 23 hr/day. It is about 1 hour from Columbus.

The Stan-Mar-Dale farm has been known for many years for its high quality genetic cattle. It is
located about 1 hour from Columbus.

QuietCove Holsteins
Quietcove Farm has had a long, distinguished history breeding and developing great cow
families in Western Ohio. In 2010, a brand new modern free stall facility was built along with a 30-cow
tiestall and box stall facility. This allowed for the care of the best of the best. Therefore, great cows can
be showcased and developed to their potential, while milking the rest of the herd in a modern, labor
efficient manner. Their objectives are to breed, develop, and care for the very best of all breeds.

Piar Mineral Ridge Dairy Farm
Mineral Ridge Dairy has recently installed 4 Lely robotic milkers, a Juno feed pusher, and added
on a state-of-the-art building for the robots. Their freestall barn was built 6 or 7 years ago and
maximizes cow comfort.

Amish Country
Amish country is a neat area to visit to see a broad range of traditional farming with the use of
horses and visiting shops with hand-made items. On Thursday is the Kidron livestock auction. You could
also visit Berlin which houses many cheese factories, including Guggisberg and Heini’s Cheese. There are
also many small shops, including harness and boots, furniture, book, and chocolate stores.
