SUPERVISES: 3 head lifeguards, 1 full- time lifeguards,
10 – 20 part-time lifeguards, 2-4 waterslide attendants

JOB SUMMARY
Under direct supervision of Recreation Center Manager, develops, plans and coordinates the year round
management of Teton County/ Jackson Recreation Center aquatic operation. Directly oversees aquatic
lifeguard staff. Assists the maintenance technician in overall mechanical and maintenance operations
within the aquatic area.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following statements are illustrative of the essential functions of the job and do not include other
nonessential or peripheral duties that may be required. Teton County retains the right to modify or change
the duties or essential functions of the job at any time.
Essential duties:
40% of time Supervision:
 Schedules all pool slide and l lifeguard staff to meet the necessary requirements for pool safety
 Conducts staff training as assigned to meet requirements
 Observe and supervises lifeguard staff
 Hire, train, and evaluate personnel, provide written feedback , to correct deficiencies
 Ensures staff (lifeguards and head lifeguards) compliance in Emergency Action Plans.
 Tracks / monitors staff certification requirements
20 % of time: Program Management:
 Assists maintenance technician in aquatic repairs to ensure pools are within state operating
standards.
 Records water balancing results and the testing of pool equipment and chemicals, to meet state
health codes
 Responsible for daily record keeping inventories, including chemical records, supplies, equipment,
and property; keeps and tracks records for review.
 Monitors and initiates orders for chemical supplies to keep appropriate inventories, as well as other
maintenance equipment / testing devises for maintaining pools.
 Develops and implements emergency action plans.

Monitors and enforces safety standards and policies including cleanliness and equipment.
Enforce policies, guidelines, regulations, respond to emergency situations and provide first aid as
necessary.
Performs lifeguard duties as necessary.
20% of time: Fiscal Management:
 Prepares annual budget for the aquatic operations section
 Maintains damage, repair, maintenance and replacement records
 Monitor expenditures and payroll for assigned budget in accordance with established procedures;
 Compile and submit detailed reports, costs, and equipment and facility use;
 Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment; distribute supplies and equipment;
20% of time: Aquatic Area Maintenance
 Assists the recreation center maintenance technician to maintain working and operable equipment
such as pumps, filters, chlorinators, motors, acid feeders, and general pool operating systems.
 Works with maintenance technician to develop and implement a maintenance schedule for all pool
related equipment.
 Maintains damage, repair, maintenance and replacement records.
 Keeps abreast of industry trends.
 Recommends and implements more efficient, cost effective methods of operating systems and
maintenance.

Inspects and maintains first aid and emergency equipment
Conducts CPR, Lifeguard Training, Water Safety Instructor, and other training as needed for staff,
conducts staff meetings as needed.
Assumes duties of Lifeguard, Head Lifeguard, Aquatic Recreation Supervisor in his/her absence.
Assists aquatic program coordinator with the scheduling and supervision of pool programs.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Minimum Education and Experience:
a) Bachelors Degree in Recreation or related field.
AND
b) Three years demonstrated progressive experience in aquatics which includes administrative
experience and supervision.
OR
c) Equivalent combination education and experience that provides the required knowledge skills and
abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
Special Certification, Training or Experience:






CPR for the Professional Rescuer/ instructor
First Aid Certification
Water Safety Instructor
Lifeguard Certification
Lifeguard Instructor Certification or ability to obtain within (6) months of hire date
Certified Pool Operator Certificate / Aquatic Facility Operator or ability to obtain within (6) months of
hire date

Blood Borne Pathogens certification

Valid Driver’s License
Other Requirements:

Must pass pre-employment criminal and sexual offender background check, and have the ability to
work unsupervised in the presence of children, seniors, and vulnerable adults.

Shall be available for holiday, weekend and early morning routinely scheduled work as assigned
within a seven day-a-week work schedule.

Must be at least 21 years of age
KNOW LEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
 Knowledge of American Red Cross or equivalent lifeguard training program policies and
procedures.
 Principles and practices of supervision, training and performance management
 Knowledge of pool operating systems; such as circulation, chlorination, and filtration systems.
 Aquatic rescue equipment; backboards, tubes, resuscitation equipment, AED
Ability to:
 Plan, organize and implement a safe operating aquatic facility
 Ability to train lifeguard personnel.
 Provide administrative and professional leadership and direction for staff
 Recommend and implement department goals and objectives.
 Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other professionals,
subordinates and the general public.
 Ability to speak one or more foreign languages is helpful, particularly Spanish.
 Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
 Ability to work unsupervised in the presence of children, seniors, and vulnerable adults.
 Ability to work under stressful situations; stay calm; and have excellent problem solving skills
Skills to:
 Proficient skill in swimming, so as to react quickly and calmly in an emergency situation.
 Skills in evaluating aquatic operations (including costs, staffing, scheduling and related areas) and
formulating recommendations
 Operate a motor vehicle safely
 Operate modern office equipment and current technology and applications, such as Microsoft Office
computer applications, Excel, Word, and outlook

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:




Ability to conduct activities involving walking 33% of the time, standing 33% of the time, and sitting 33%
of the time.
Ability to lift, carry, push and/or pull burdens of minimal weight up to 100 lbs. Move heavy burdens
occasionally (during a rescue).
Ability to grasp and manipulate office equipment and similar other tools and materials.
Ability to conduct activities involving stooping, kneeling/bending, crouching, crawling, twisting, climbing,
and reaching are minimal.

Ability to participate in routine conversation in person or via telephone and to distinguish telephone, voice
and other auditory tones.
Ability to use a computer for intermittent periods of time.
Ability to operate a vehicle or use public transportation.
The ability to work with hands above shoulder height with up to 20 lbs. is required on a limited basis.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
100% of duties are performed within an indoor and aquatic environment. The incumbent may be exposed to
the adverse conditions of heat and humidity in pool facility. Exposure to fumes, odors, dust, gases,
explosives, toxic/caustic chemicals and blood-borne pathogens, body fluids and tissue, and diseases of
known or unknown origin are experienced less than 5% of the time daily. Direct or indirect threats of
violence by others are very limited on a daily basis.
