MASTER OF SCIENCE COURSE The Postgraduate Program “Aquaculture”-“Aquatic Animal Health” of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Thessaly runs in collaboration with the Department of Aquaculture & Fisheries of the Technological Institute of Epirus. The scope of the program is the specialization of scientists that already hold an agricultural/veterinary degree, or other similar degrees, on the wide section of Aquaculture (aquatic organisms and aquatic environment management, diseases prevention and therapy, final product improvement). The objectives of the program are as follows: To equip the graduates with the necessary knowledge about the modern developments on aquaculture To help the graduates grasp the basic values of Biology, Physiology, and Welfare of the main breeding aquatic organisms, in relation to the variation of quality in the aquatic environment and the demands of the cultivating system To help them understand the general philosophy behind the prevention methods and the applied therapy of the aquatic organisms diseases through the various development stages To make them realize the need to respect the protection methods and the various ways of intervention on the aquatic organisms breeding environment To make them capable of understanding the basic values of Economics of Animal Production and enforce them to the Management of the related companies To familiarize them with the applications of quality control systems on the production process and the final product To prepare the graduates for PhD studies. The course is directed by Dr F. Athanassopoulou. The tuition fee for this Master course is 1,800 Euros per year. Thusfar, the Faculty has awarded 103 Master of Science degrees. Currently, there are 20 MSc students in the Faculty. Selection of MSc students is based on academic and professional achievements, excellent knowledge of a foreign language and the outcome of an interview. After two-years long studies the Faculty offers a degree of Master of Science in the fields of “Aquaculture” or of “Aquatic Animal Health. Award of the degree is based on results of written examinations and completion of a dissertation presenting the results of a practical project, according to the following curriculum: 4th term: Thesis (ECTS=30)
