Summary of Responsibilities Reporting to the Vice President for Institutional Advancement and working close partnership with the Associate Vice President for Marketing and Communications, the Director of Campaign Communications leads a team of communications professionals to design and execute a multi-year, comprehensive campaign communications plan. The Director will provide strategic leadership and work with internal and external creative partners to develop on- and off-line communications to help Occidental achieve ambitious participation, fundraising, and visibility goals. S/he will support the Vice President in integrating private and public phase campaign communications. Essential Functions The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by an individual assigned to this job. Other duties may be assigned. Campaign Communications Plan Development & Management (approx. 80%) Develop a strategic comprehensive campaign communications strategy for I.A. and the College in close partnership with the Marketing and Communications department. Education the Institutional Advancement team about all campaign communication strategies and provide templates and tools for the IA team to use when executing their work (including, but not limited to major gift proposal templates, campaign collaterals, guidelines for campaign communications in e-mail and letter correspondence, etc.) Develop a campaign communications stewardship plan in partnership with the Director of Donor Relations and the AVP for Marketing and Communications which outlines how and when major gifts to the campaign are featured in Occidental College communication materials (print, web, and social media). Develop creative briefs for each campaign project/priority. Partner with in-house (Marketing and Communications) and any outside creative firm(s) to develop campaign content and collaterals. Lead the inter-departmental Campaign Launch Team (which will eventually morph into the Campaign Celebration Team) to plan and implement the Campaign Launch experience, including invitation, program, and event follow-up. Management and Supervision (approx.. 20%) During Campaign periods, serve as part of the Campaign Planning Team or the Campaign Team as appropriate. Partner with the College Marketing and Communications Office to develop multi-year and annual goals and operational plans for Campaign Communications that are grounded in the institutional strategic plan and the vision and goals of institutional advancement. Establish and maintain a culture of performance management, including effective onboarding and training of new staff, coaching and mentoring of all staff, and formal mid-year and annual performance reviews. Conduct effective searches in partnership with the Office of Human Resources with an emphasis on recruiting a diverse applicant pool for all positions. Supervise the Development Writer; Manage the Development Writing team, including in-house and freelance writer(s). Serve as project manager for all campaign communications. Required Skills Bachelor’s degree, preferably in marketing or communications. 5+ years of related work experience in marketing and communications; ideally in fundraising or philanthropy. Proven track record in developing campaign and fundraising-related communications – both online and offline. Experienced at setting strategic goals and objectives, tracking progress toward those goals and objectives, and reporting on that progress. Excellent writing (from copy to correspondence to strategic documents and briefs) and presentational skills. Comfortable and conversant with digital and social media, with an understanding of their use in philanthropic marketing, stewardship, and communications. Seasoned manager – of teams (influencing them to achieve desired results), and of strategic and executional processes. Demonstrated success at motivating creative teams (internal and external) to develop effective, on-target communications in a timely manner that instill pride and inspire action among the target audience. A self-starter who prides her/himself on his/her ability to take the initiative and has an entrepreneurial spirit.
