Students must demonstrate cultural competency in ONE of the following ways:
Foreign language proficiency at the 203 level or above OR
Study abroad of a minimum of 3 hours of semester credit OR
Equivalency of 2 semesters of sign language OR
One ENL course (ED 398 or ED 498W) OR
Differentiation and Culturally Responsive Teaching in Early Childhood (ED404) OR
3 hours of a relevant independent study, as approved by the program faculty.

K-6 CORE IV: Student Teaching
Students must have been admitted to Teacher Education/COE CORE III before enrolling in COE CORE IV. Elementary
majors are required to complete 2 full semesters of student teaching. At least one of those semesters must be in a
generalist setting. The other semester may be in ENL, Early Childhood (EC) or Special Education (MI)

For curricular and pedagogical reasons we require all K-6 students to get a Mild Intervention Minor.
These courses can be taken in any order AFTER TAKING ED242 but PRIOR to Student Teaching.

NOTE: 126 hours are required for graduation from the University. At least 40 of the 126 hours needed for graduation
must be in upper division courses - courses numbered 300 or above. If you follow this specified plan you will have met
the core curriculum course requirements, the Butler University graduation course requirements, and the initial Indiana
licensing course requirements.

SECTION D. TESTING REQUIREMENTS for K-6 Licensure
The CASA basic skills exam or other accepted benchmark indicator must be received 1 week prior admission to COE
CORE II classes. Information is available through the COE website and your advisor.
A Pedagogy Exam and Indiana Core Content Tests are required for teaching licensure in the state of Indiana. The tests
measure understanding of the content and methods applicable to the specific subject areas. These tests should be
taken before student teaching. Test preparation materials and registration are available at
http://www.in.nesinc.com/Content/Docs/IN_test_requirements.pdf .
SECTION E. CPR/HEIMLICH/AED REQUIREMENT
Applicants who receive an ‘initial’ teacher’s license must have successfully completed training in:
1. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation that includes a test
3. Moving a foreign body causing an

obstruction in an airway/Heimlich;
2. AED
4. Suicide awareness/prevention
A copy of your CPR/Heimlich/AED certification AND a certificate verifying your successful completion of a suicide
awareness/prevention module are required for original licensure.
