Not available for Fake Bake Tanning Treatments This months’ newsletter will focus on Paying for time of services and not the trends! Skin Therapy AND Top Ingredients to avoid in skincare Spa Treatment of the Month - Back Neck and Shoulder Massage NEW common cold sale. aromatherapy blend for Pay for Time, Not Trends This issue here is the way spas and some therapist’s bill for bodywork. They isolate modalities and charge different prices for each one. Effective touch therapy is effective touch therapy. One approach shouldn’t be any more expensive than another. Paying more for a person’s essence, wisdom and experience can legitimately command a higher fee. However Craniosacral therapy, Thai Massage, Reflexology, Ayurveda, deep tissue – these modalities, along with others, get promoted as a higher category, a style, a trend. What about the qualifications of the practitioner? Focus should be on what is the most appropriate things for the client. What about the intention and essence of any given application and the inherent value of weaving, combining and blending paradigms? Today’s prevailing professional touch domain is way out of balance. It seems you pay according to what’s hot in the moment. Suddenly the name of some modality carries more weight. SO CHARGE DOUBLE! Maybe even make the treatment a 3 hour minimum. Make it exclusive. Give it and exotic medical sounding name. So much hype so much discrimination, so much division and separation. Its sales and promotion, and its fake and its self serving. How can we legitimately use price to determine the power and importance of any particular style or technique. This is a money driven approach. Why not just charge for the time and skill of the practitioner? Pay for the therapist; buy a package based on what she can deliver. Whatever happened to honesty and the long term goals of healing and service? Skin Therapy and Top ingredients to avoid in Skin Care Winter lips feeling dry and cracked? No amount of lip balm seems to help? Ensure you regularly exfoliate the lips as no amount of lip balm will help as this layer blocks the absorption. Use an ointment based lip balm and not a wax based stick like Chapstick. Wax won’t hydrate parched lips; drink plenty of water too, to hydrate from the inside out. MAKE UP WITH BENEFITS Think your make up is just for covering imperfections? Think again. There are many products on the market that can do so much more, like fighting ACNE and helping reduce HYPERPIGMENTATION. For acne sufferers covering up blemishes with make up as you try to eliminate them can be a vicious cycle. There are many products which contain powerful ingredients, but salicylic acid is the one you should look for if you have acne. CLINIQUE is a medicine rich foundation and perfect for concealing and treating blemishes due to its high concentration of SALICYLIC ACID. DID YOU KNOW? Almost any make up that touts oil ingredients is likely to block pores which leads to outbreaks if you are acne prone. Proactive.com offer a medicated blemish stick with 2 percent SALICYLIC ACID. Sensitive skin An alternative for skin which is too sensitive for salicylic acid is mineral based Alison Raffaele Face Forward Primer SPF 15: Acne Response. It helps fight acne with AMINO ACID RICH OLIGOPEPTIDES it penetrates the pore and can kill acne causing bacteria. PIMPLE PICKING! This is the worst thing you can do. You potentially can spread the infection, increase the chances of scarring and slow the healing process. EMERGENCY REMEDY, you can buy an over the counter cortisone cream, but next time, if you must pick, use a comedone extractor. Another EMERGENCY FIX is to chop up a noncoated aspirin and mix with water to form paste, and then apply to the spot for 15-20 minutes. The Salicylic acid in the aspirin helps kill the bacteria and to prevent it pigmenting use a SPF. Green tinted make up is good at masking red discolouration, however the product Cover FX, a highly pigmented opaque foundation offers the best coverage. Ingredients that irritate. Skin care are marketed to look, smell and feel good, but in formulating these products, manufacturers have added unnecessary ingredients that may irritate skin according to Jesse E Smith MD, Plastic surgeon. Common irritants include fragrance, alcohol, lanolin, dyes and preservatives. 8 INGREDIENTS TO AVOID Use this list and save it. From the experts at the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics When it comes to choosing beauty products the best advice for consumers is that simpler is better. Choose products with fewer synthetic fragrances and fewer products overall advises Stacey Malkin, co founder of Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. It is especially important to reduce chemical exposure whilst pregnant or if you are planning to become pregnant. 1. Mercury listed as a possible carcinogen and found in mascara and skin lightening creams. 2. Lead Acetate, toxic and banned in Europe, found in hair dyes and cleansers in the US. 3. Phthalates, linked to birth defects and infertility, found in nail polishes, fragrances and hairspray. 4. Fragrance, a mixture of chemicals that are not disclosed on labels, likely to contain phthalates, can be sensitising and cause allergic reactions, found in shampoos, body spray, perfumes and colognes. 5. Hydroquinone, toxic to brain and skin and possible carcinogen, can also cause a skin disease called ochronosis that leaves irreversible black blue lesions on skin. Found in skin lightening products and moisturisers. 6. Nanoparticles, largely untested and unlabelled in personal care products, capable of being absorbed into the bloodstream. Found in eye shadows, bronzers, sunscreens. 7. Placenta produces progesterone and oestrogen that interfere the body’s normal hormone functions, increased risk of serious health problems when used in cosmetics. Found in hair relaxers, moisturisers and hair conditioners. 8. Petrochemicals, a by product of crude oil (appears on label as petrolatum, mineral oil, paraffin and petroleum distillation) may contain known or suspected human carcinogens. Found in shampoos, anti-ageing creams, mascaras, perfumes, foundations, lipstick and lip balms. MOISTURISING When the skin doesn’t produce oil, it can look Dull or Dry because hydration is not stemming from within... Facial moisturisers allow the skin to retain moisture by improving the barrier function of the skin “Hydration supports the barrier function of the skin so it can function as it should” says dermatologist Ava Shamban. Topical moisturisers don’t technically add water since water is not physically being created. Ingredients like ceramides, fatty acids, squalene and cholesterol allow skin to retain hydration. The ingredients to avoid in a facial moisturiser are shea butter, as its very thick it is better used on the body rather than the face. Waxes as these can lead to a false sense of moisturisation. Lanolin oil as it can aggravate acne and mineral oil; it is cheap and easily accessible and doesn’t do much more than create a film on the skin. It can trick your skin into thinking it’s actually hydrated. It’s also thick and can clog pores which may lead to breakouts. TREATMENT OF THE MONTH – Equilibrium’s Signature Massage BACK NECK AND SHOULDERS MASSAGE #17 Swedish style massage is the most common type in the western world. There are other types of massage such as sports, but they all incorporate the main techniques. Massage oils are used and the skin is warmed with effleurage strokes. Petrissage is used for releasing muscles tension. The Benefits: Most commonly this type of massage is incredibly calming and can make you feel more relaxed and less stressed. It can also improve circulation by increasing oxygen flow in the blood and help the body to eliminate toxins. It can relax, tone and soothe muscles and relieve stiffness and sometimes pain. I also use trigger point therapy. This is when pressure is directly applied on a trigger point for a short period until the pain lessens. Knots can arise from painful, irritated areas in muscles, caused by accidents, everyday stress and tension of sport. Lactic acid builds up causing a decrease in circulation, inflammation and pain. The pressure helps to break up the muscles fibres and release the toxins. AND FINALLY......... Winter is here! And with the cold weather comes the winter cold.
