Introduction
This document describes the Rebel Group Dynamics dataset. These data are organized at
the rivalry year level for all intrastate rivalries identified by the Armed Conflict Database
(Gleditsch, et al. 2002). New data on rebel group changes are added to existing data on
rivalries, nonstate actors (Cunningham, et al. 2009), foreign military intervention (Pearson
and Baumann 1989 updated by Pickering and Kisangani 2006), UCDP External Assistance
(Hogbladh, et al. 2011), mediation (Bercovitch, de Rouen and Pospieszna (2011), conflict
intensity (Lacina and Gleditsch 2005), lootable resources and mountainous terrain (Lujala
2010). For coding information on those variables, refer to their codebooks which can be
identified in the references below.
Coding information on rebel group changes are provided below. For a full description of
variable conceptualization, see Olson Lounsbery (2016).
Rebel Group Change
According to Olson Lounsbery and Cook (2011), rebel groups can “either splinter/multiply,
coalition/die off, re-emerge as separate entities after having formed a coalition or died off,
or simply be replaced by another group” (79). In order to identify these changes among the
actors involved in intrastate armed conflicts between the 1975 and 2009 time period,
internal rivalries identified by the Armed Conflict Database (ACD) are examined. Civil
conflicts tend to endure moving in and out of periods of violence. As a result, when the
same actors or set of actors are engaged in armed struggle over time, they are considered
to be engaged in the same rivalry and examined as such. Rivalries are determined by the
ACD conflict identification codes resulting in 134 internal rivalries and 1,339 rivalry years
(the unit of analysis for the data). Coups are eliminated and not included here.
Variables in the Rebel Group Dynamics dataset
TotalNo_ - Total number of rebel groups for the entire rivalry as identified by ACD. Count
variable.
NumGrps – Number of rebel groups active during the year. Count variable
NewGrp – A group emerges in the armed rivalry that is not a splinter faction. 1=new group,
0=otherwise.
Splinter – A faction of a previously identified rebel group emerges in the armed rivalry.
1=splinter faction, 0=otherwise.
Coalition – A unified rebel group emerges from previously identified rebel factions.
1=coalition, 0=otherwise.
Abate – A rebel group which had been active in the previous year is no longer active.
1=abated group, 0=otherwise.
2
Renewed_Grp – A rebel faction which had previously been active renews its struggle.
1=renewed group, 0=otherwise.
