After two years – Arles, the South of France
Gauguin, friend and fellow painter, joined him
A lot of tension between them, quarrel about art
Drank heavily
December 1888, open razor, drinking, argument , cut off part of his ear
Moved voluntarily into an asylum for the insane for treatment
There, woke up early, went out to paint
The last two years of his live – most famous painting: Irises (sold for 53,9 million in 1987), Self Portrait without a
Beard sold for 71,5 million 1988)
Left the south , moved to Auvers-sur-Oise, continued working, depression
Painting outside, shot himself in the chest : “For the good off all”, two days later died
When died, no money, sold only one of his paintings in life
Sister-in law took collection to Holland, instantly recognized as a genius
Colour was the chief symbol of expression
