1. Warm-up: Anticipation Guide
2. KWL chart about Afghanistan
3. View video trailer clip of “The Breadwinner”
4. Think/Pair/Share: Make predictions based on the cover of the book and the video trailer with your
partner and write your answer in your Writing Journal.
5. Background information of Afghanistan: Locate on map

means.

Objective: I will analyze theme and genre in different cultural context. I will analyze the way in which theme or
meaning represents a view on the human condition. I will relate the characters of mythic literature to 20 th and
21st century American novels, plays, or films. I will analyze the internal and external development of
characters. Reflect on understanding to monitor comprehension.
Activities:
1. Quickwrite: Think about movies or books in which the villain is more compelling compelling than the
hero. What qualities does such a villain typically display? Which of these traits contribute most to his or
her appeal? Record your responses in a short paragraph.
2. Literary Analysis: Trickster Tales
3. Reading Strategy: Predict Using your background knowledge of this character’s contradictory
qualities, as well as text clues, can help you predict upcoming story events. As you read, use a t-chart
to record Coyote’s key traits and unusual behavior. Pause occasionally to predict what will happen
next.
