Weathering and EROSION
PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECT
Due Date: January 31, 2012
OBJECTIVE: To observe the effects of weathering and erosion in the Southern California area.
Procedure: You must take pictures around the Southern California area which illustrate different
types of mechanical weathering, chemical weathering, and erosion.
Presentation: Option #1: Photos are mounted on a white poster board with labels and typed
descriptions. Option #2: Photos are glued on to pieces of white paper with labels and typed
descriptions, and are then compiled in a portfolio and bound with a plastic or paper report cover.
Requirements:
 Each picture must clearly show the natural effects of weathering or erosion on rocks (no
constructions sites, asphalt roads, cement sidewalk, etc.)

Each photo must be labeled above or below with date, location, and type of
weathering/erosion.

Each photo needs a description that clearly explains how the photograph demonstrates the
type of weathering/erosion chosen for the photograph.

You must be in the photograph in order to receive full credit. This is to prevent students
from cutting and pasting photos from the internet. If you would like to have close up
shots of the weathering/erosion, you may take one wide shot with you in the picture, and
one close-up shot without you in the picture.
Examples:
Please show evidence of the following types of weathering and erosion in your photos. Include at
least one photo per type of weathering/erosion.
 Abrasion caused by water flowing over rocks (See page 299, Figure 2)
 Abrasion caused by blowing sand (See page 299, Figure 2)
 Abrasion caused by rocks grinding against each other while falling (See page 299, Figure 2)
 Chemical weathering through oxidation (See page 303)
 Differential weathering (See page 304)
 Soil erosion caused by flowing water (See pages 315 and 366)
