Harrison Elba SHWPCE HW 2 1. 100 tons X $10= $1000/day Average waste ~4.5 lbs per person per day * 1500 population*365*2000 lbs/ton = 1230 tons/year In 4 years = 4900 ton capacity of landfill Daily waste with furniture = 4.5*1500/2000 + 100 = 103.4 tons/day 4900/103.4=47.4 days capacity 2. 8.5X11 copy paper Between CNG, SCG and UI, estimate 10,000 reams/ year 50,000 lbs 3. P= 8 tons/ (2*2*10) = .2 tons/ft2 = 2.777 lbs/ in2 4. I would argue against the indiscriminate incineration of waste producing toxic emissions and instead suggest domestic cleaner fuels (gas) and renewable energy 5. One form of refuse can transfer it’s water content to another (drier) form upon contact, in the can, in the truck or in a landfill. This moisture content is an important factor on energy conversion and decomposition. Wet garbage will consume more energy and during the energy extraction process and therefore is less desirable than low moisture content refuse. 6. Paper= 50% Garbage = 20% Aluminum= 10% Plastics= 10% Other= 10% 7. Code is the identifier on plastic that indicates what type of plastic and how it should be recycled. Switch refers to the sensor that sorts and separates the types of plastics by sensing the code. 8. They respond by appealing to consumers that plastic is a boon to packaging. Also they post lobbyists to ensure that legislation is carefully examined. 9. Population = 100,000 Storage= 180,000 cubic yards Daily waste= .7*4.5*100,000 = 315,000 lbs Volume = 315,000/200= 1575 cubic yards Compaction = 1575 * 200/900 = 350 cubic yards/day 180,000/350= 514.3 days to fill storage 10. As-received- this heat value includes waste containing water, organic and inorganic matter Moisture free- no moisture content Moisture and ash free- no moisture and no inorganic content 11. The objective is to reduce refuse going to landfills (apparently 50% is the target) . There are many methods to waste reduction- including reuse, recycling, recovery and minimization. To accomplish, we would first have to characterize the states waste composition. This allows us to develop the most suitable plan of action on how to divert waste and reduce landfill volumes. 12. 13. 14. 15. 16. 17. 18. 19. I would include the alternative pathways recommendation in the mandate instead of leaving it up to the towns to decide what works best because inevitable they will take the easy and cheap way out if there is no state leadership. It is not recycled because there is no infrastructure in place to recycle it.
