An island in the South Pacific has a problem. It’s hollow.
Anxiety levels are rising in a North American boardroom. Eve’s garden is bursting with next door’s rubbish. Even the ducks have
relocated… they’re in Bangladesh.
In the high-energy, ‘seriously funny’ style for which Riding Lights is well known, BAKED ALASKA serves up the realities of climate
change with flair and clarity about the temperatures involved.

Rule of Life workshop
Wednesday 9 December
10am – 1pm
Wolvesey
A workshop for anyone who’d like to promote
Passionate Personal Spirituality
Together we’ll explore:
• various styles of spirituality and approaches to prayer
• how we can help people pray, alone and with others
• how to design prayer activities
• how to organise a Quiet Day/Week of Guided Prayer
• how a Rule of Life can be helpful
• where to start!
Advent might be a good time to reflect on your personal
Rule/Rhythm of Life – either reviewing one you developed
around the Lent course, or starting from scratch. This ‘quiet
morning’ offers some space, and a bit of support.
As well as opening & closing prayers, there will be a short
introduction and an opportunity to share with others. The
rest of the morning will be for you to use as you wish – and
I’ll be available for short one-to-one chats if that would be
useful.
Places are limited to 20.
To book, or for more information, please contact The Revd Sally Dakin, Diocesan Spirituality Adviser:

Sarah has been working most recently with Romance Academy, a national
charity that helps young people both inside and outside the church to explore
how to build healthy relationships. In addition to engaging directly with young
people, she has had the pleasure of working with youth workers and parents
across the UK to tackle tricky topics well with their teenagers. Prior to this she
was Youth director at St Paul’s Church, Camberley.

afternoon. Please visit our events page for more information.
Archdeacons’ Visitations
The 31 July has passed for another year and the Visitations are now over. Thank you to all Churchwardens, Clergy and their
supporters for attending the celebration services throughout the diocese. The host churches did us proud once again and we
received warm welcomes from Romsey Abbey, St Mary’s Andover, Shirley Southampton, St John the Evangelist Hartley Wintney,
Christchurch Priory and St Mary’s Old Alresford. We were thoroughly spoilt with delicious cakes and biscuits, along with glorious
singing and very thoughtful readings and sermons. It is of course Archdeacon Michael’s last year of Visitation Services before his
retirement in November and Mark Tanner took the opportunity to pay tribute to Michael when we gathered at Hartley Wintney.
Those present showed their appreciation for Michael and for his ministry with a round of heartfelt lengthy applause.
Thank you for all you have done and are doing, as together, we journey towards becoming a Mission-Shaped Diocese.

Church Urban Fund – Money Matters
Thursday 5 November
King’s House Conference Centre (King's Church, Sidney Street, Manchester M1 7HB)
£12 per person (lunch and refreshments provided)
A joint CUF and Church of England survey released earlier this year revealed that 22% of churches are involved in offering debt
or money advice services and 17% support credit unions.
The chair of the Archbishop of Canterbury’s task group on responsible credit and savings is to give a key note speech at a Church
Urban Fund (CUF) conference on financial exclusion later this year. Church leaders, including clergy and volunteers from a range
of social action projects including food banks and credit unions, are being encouraged to attend the event at the King’s House
Conference Centre.
Conference goers will be able to choose seminars from a range of different subjects including debt advice, supporting credit
unions, campaigning and creating a range of integrated services. Through the conference, CUF hopes to share good practice
and build on work already under way to tackle financial exclusion in areas such as promoting access to affordable credit and
debt advice.

Theology Quest and Questions – Exploring the New Testament
Autumn 2015: From Jesus to the Gospels
Spring 2016: From the Gospels to Jesus
Summer 2016: From Jesus to Paul
Sarum College
£6 session / £55 term (£70 for essay writers)
From Judaism to Jesus, and then from Christian Judaism to Christianity! This course provides an opportunity to study how one
faith led to another. Jesus belongs to the history of the Jewish people, and we examine in depth what made him so remarkable.
Paul came to be viewed very critically, to put it mildly, by those who treasured the traditions of Judaism. His thought and
influence deserve careful exposure and assessment. The gospels, put together with all the impressive skills of the ancient storyteller, promote four interpretations of the meaning of Jesus in times and places far from where he himself had lived and
worked. They are the first items on the agenda of a comprehensive study of Christian beginnings.

Acts 435 – A Simple way to help
5 years on, 5,000 people helped, half a million pounds gone directly to
those who need it. Plenty of reason to celebrate, something Acts 435 did
recently with two key groups of people who make the scheme work: the
advocates and the donors.
Advocates are based at local churches (and some charities) and post
requests on the Acts 435 website www.acts435.org.uk for the people they
know to be in need in their local community. The request is for a specific
item or service they need up to the value of £120.
Donors look through the requests and choose to support someone, with just £5 perhaps, or what they can afford. Together
donors meet that need and make a difference. 100% of what they give goes to the person in need. Administration costs are
kept low and funded through Gift Aid and private sponsorship.
Sound simple? It is and 5 years of giving show how it has worked, enabling people to shop economically thanks to the gift of a
fridge, visit terminally ill relatives thanks to the gift of a bus ticket, get a job thanks to the gift of decent interview clothes.
Try it and see! Open up this opportunity to help those in need:

Pilgrimage to Paris
Schools, churches and individuals are being encouraged to show their support for a 250-mile
pilgrimage from London to Paris aimed at encouraging world leaders to agree a fair, ambitious
and legally binding deal at the United Nations Climate Change Conference.
The Church of England is launching the pilgrimage to Paris with an invitation to participate by
walking some or all of the route, cheer on pilgrims as they pass by schools or other local centres, or by holding ‘mini-pilgrimages’
in local communities and prayer vigils for the success of the talks.
The pilgrimage will begin at St Martin-in-the-Fields in central London on November 13 and finish in the French capital on
November 27, as negotiators from more than 190 nations gather for the start of the talks.
The pilgrims will hand in campaign petitions to Christiana Figueres, executive secretary of the United Nations Framework
Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) on November 28 before joining an interfaith gathering and a mass mobilisation of
prayer in Paris.
The pilgrimage has the backing of the Church of England and major aid agencies, Christian Aid, Tearfund and CAFOD.

Us – Ethiopia/South Sudan Urgent Appeal
Us (formerly USPG) is sending emergency funds to support the Anglican Church in Ethiopia as it
reaches out to refugees fleeing war in South Sudan.
A civil war between political factions in South Sudan saw 350,000 refugees fleeing the country for
the Gambella and Asosa regions of Ethiopia during 2014. Now fighting is intensifying and a
further 150,000 refugees are arriving in Ethiopia, putting immense pressure on relief efforts.
Most of the refugees arrive with only what they can carry, usually their children and a few clothes. The needs are enormous.
But, with support from the Us, the Anglican Church is doing what it can to provide food aid, education and community centres
You can make a donation to the Us Rapid Response Fund for Ethiopia at www.weareUs.org.uk/donate
