Beginning Tennis PE 1481 Course Philosophy and Instructor Requirements Philosophy: This course is designed for individuals who wish to learn the basic fundamentals of tennis. The course includes the fundamental skills and techniques needed to play tennis successfully. It also includes the knowledge of rules, terminology, etiquette, and strategy. Learning Outcomes: Assessment should measure communication, critical thinking, and appropriate social science research skills, as well as student awareness of self and society and knowledge of factual content. Instructor Objectives: The instructor’s teaching techniques should ensure that the students will: Develop knowledge of rules, procedure of play, etiquette, safety, and terminology to play tennis successfully. Develop the essential skills necessary to successfully play tennis. Develop patterns of play and strategy for successful play. Develop the basic shots used in playing tennis. Course Teaching Requirements: The following should be adhered to by all instructors teaching this course in the traditional setting: Due to the limited number of tennis courts, the numbers of students in the classes, and the skill levels of those students, it is necessary to have various skills and drills taking place throughout the semester so that the needs of the students can be achieved. Below is a list of the activities in which the student can expect to be engaged during the semester. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Rules and proper etiquette of play. Procedures of the game. Warm-up activities. Essential shots – tennis, lob, drop, smash, forehand, backhand. Patterns of play – singles, doubles. Limited lecture time will be used to instruct students on the rules, terminology, safety, basic skills, basic shots, etiquette, and patterns of play. These will be emphasized throughout the course. The student will be responsible for the textbook information. The student must successfully complete knowledge tests and skill tests. A comprehensive final exam will be given at the end of the semester. The attendance policy of ASU-Beebe must be adhered to. Assessment Responsibilities: Instructors teaching this course will be expected to participate in assessment activities as dictated by the division. Instructors will be given additional information by the lead instructor during the term assessments are to be completed.
