“M ATERIAL W EALTH , M ORAL C ORRUPTION : R EINTERPRETING THE ‘ PARADOX OF COMMERCIAL SOCIETY ’
IN THE WORKS OF A DAM S MITH .
The view that Adam Smith was a proponent of the free market and also a moral egalitarian has been extensively adopted and adapted along a wide spectrum of Smith scholarship that includes historians, economists, and contemporary liberal political philosophers. In this paper, I clarify interpretations of the “paradox of commercial society”—that is, the existence of material deprivation, inequality, and moral corruption amidst general wealth—in the works of Adam Smith.
In doing so, I also make a conceptual distinction between Smith’s views on equality across his Theory of Moral Sentiments and the Wealth of Nations. Finally, I challenge views of Smith’s alleged egalitarianism by closely examining the plausibility and consistency of Smith’s “solutions” that resolve the tension between moral corruption and material wealth.

This paper contributes to the debate over the unity of Adam Smith’s corpus by emphasizing a pervasive methodology, namely, the use of equilibrium and comparative statics arguments in explanations of human behavior. We demonstrate the
Smith’s application of this rhetorical strategy in his works on economics, moral psychology, language, and political economic development. We argue that this method has implications not only for the contents of the so-called “missing second book,” but also for understanding Smith’s unified approach to human behavior in all aspects of life.

Undergraduate Research Apprentice for Dr. Kim Shelton, Dept. of Classics (2009-2010)
I participated in the excavations of the Bronze Age archaeological site of Petsas House in Mycenae, Greece under the direction of Dr. Kim Shelton in July 2007 and July 2008. In addition to field work, I cleaned, catalogued, and conserved finds for scientific and stylistic pottery analysis at the site museum. During the academic year, I assisted in the organization of
Nemea and Mycenae Excavation archives including digital database and website management and helped organize and prepare materials for lectures and presentations.
