Expansion Packet Updated June 2013 by Daphne Kozlowski Theta Chi Omega National Multicultural Sorority, Inc. Expansion Packet The Belief of Theta Chi Omega Shall Be… Theta Chi Omega National Multicultural Sorority, Inc. was the dream of four ladies that wanted something different. They dreamed of a sisterhood that would evolve and fulfill what each felt was true sisterhood. With this in mind, the dedicated ladies met their dream. Rosa V. Burgos, Cristina Espinoza, Rosa "Rosie" M. Martinez, and Maria G. Morales are the proud founding mothers of the last multicultural sorority of the 20th century. On October 8, 1999 at the University of Texas at Arlington, Theta Chi Omega National Multicultural Sorority, Inc. was recognized as a multicultural, social, and service sorority. The belief of Theta Chi Omega is to encourage a sisterhood filled with trust and belief in oneself and fellow sister. Our endeavor is to assemble ladies of great quality through love, respect, trust, and individuality. Since our founding, Theta Chi Omega National Multicultural Sorority, Inc. has expanded to Chicago. In Chicago, the five founding sisters at Northeastern Illinois University had the same dream as the founding mothers, to be part of a sisterhood that was more than just letters and socials. Andrea Bruni, Tamkeia Donaldson-Hampton, Belinda Famadico, Verlee Nicole Nathaniel, and Latisha Thompson founded Theta Chi Omega National Multicultural Sorority, Inc. on August 24, 2004. While the sisterhood is still young and expanding, new members have a chance to be part of making history. As a founding sister, you will be the one setting examples and creating an everlasting sisterhood unlike anything your university has ever seen. “Strength through unity, love through individuality” Alumnae Board Maria Renteria Trista Gunderman Kathy Baran Melissa McGlynn Expansion Packet Updated July 2012 Goals and Purpose The purpose of Theta Chi Omega is to assemble ladies of great quality through love, respect, trust, and individuality. We will accomplish the greatest sisterhood by encouraging every lady to strive for and achieve ultimate success as a whole. We are determined to dedicate our time and service to our community by making it a better place for future generations. Theta Chi Omega National Multicultural Sorority, Inc. holds itself to a specific set of goals that set us apart from other sororities. The goals of Theta Chi Omega are: Meet and uphold member expectations, needs, and desires Develop a lasting sisterhood Break boundaries to reach personal and group academic goals Establish trust, respect, confidence, and overall love between sisters Become aware of what is happening in our community and the world around us Leave a lasting impression in the community to be modeled upon by future generations Develop better communications with all Greek organizations “A Theta is a woman that cares about others and possesses honor and integrity.” Sister Testimonial: Daphne “Colorful” Koz I joined Theta Chi Omega as a freshman at Northeastern Illinois University in 2007. From the minute I walked up to their table at the organization fair, I knew I was with family. My sisters have truly become by second family. When I was diagnosed with Lupus in 2009, they were right by my side during every treatment. Since becoming a Theta, I have gained more than just sisters. I have gained more confidence, the ability to work well with everyone, and the passion for helping others. I have never regretted joining a small sorority because now I can be a part of the history. 2 Expansion Packet Updated July 2012 Service and Philanthropy The sisters of Theta Chi Omega National Multicultural Sorority Inc. follow the founding principle of service and philanthropy will leave a lasting impression in the community to be modeled upon by future generations. Because of this principle, each chapter supports two philanthropies. With the national philanthropy, Children International, each chapter ‘adopts’ a child and helps support him or her through fundraising efforts. This sisters hold seasonal clothing drives, school supplies drives, and bake sales in order to send not only money but also every day necessities. Each sister is required to complete twenty hours of community service a semester. Not only have sisters continuously exceeded this number; they incorporate service into their daily lives. In addition to the national philanthropy, each chapter chooses a yearly local philanthropy. These range depending on the chapter but some of the most recent have been: Deborah’s Place – a shelter for battered women and children The Alliance for Lupus Research The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society The Special Olympics Y-Me Breast Cancer Foundation One sister, Shevonne “Legendary” Booze, has been known since pledging for her passion for service. Shevonne, or Shevy as sisters know her, has given the sisterhood a new way of doing service. As a new member, she organized monthly ‘soup kitchens’ at her apartment where sisters prepared meals and packaged them for distribution. Shevy didn’t just want sisters to cook and drop off the food at a shelter, she and her chapter sisters walked through Chicago passing out the food themselves. This experience of seeing the people they were helping changed the sisters’ view of what community service is. Since then, Shevy has been elected to not only the chapter Community Service Chair, but also Philanthropy chair where she continues to inspire sisters to help people every day and to always work to create a better community and world around us. 3 Expansion Packet Updated July 2012 Academics and Scholarship The goal of Theta Chi Omega is to break boundaries to reach personal and group academic goals. We strive every day to help ladies meet their full academic potential. Theta Chi Omega was established in part to support collegiate women navigate their scholastic careers. Often times students need encouragement in order to persevere through their education. We support members in their personal academic quest and stand behind each other, whether it is through study groups or by being lending emotional support. We recognize the important of education to achieve goals. We encourage women to utilize education as a tool to make their dreams a reality. We are very proud or all of our members’ accomplishments. Many have gone on to graduate studies where they continue a tradition of academic excellence. One sister that can be seen as a true vision of academic excellence is Rebecca “Enchanting” Price from Chicago’s Beta Chapter. Rebecca joined Theta Chi Omega as a first semester freshman in 2010 with an already outstanding high school academic profile. After joining Theta Chi Omega National Multicultural Sorority Inc., she continued to excel in all aspects of college life. Not only did her GPA remain a 4.0, she pushed sisters to strive for their best. As the Academic Chair for Beta Chapter, she instituted daily study rooms where the sisters of Theta Chi Omega could go and peacefully get their work done. In addition to that, she set up tutoring programs for sisters that she knew needed help and enlisted the assistance of Northeastern Illinois University’s Academic Advisor Katherine Glies to speak with not only sisters, but the Northeastern community on the importance of academic excellance. Rebecca, along with the rest of the sisters at Beta Chapter, received the Highest GPA award in both 2011 and 2012. This award was given by the United Greek Council and looked at the GPAs of all Greek organizations on campus. In 2011, Rebecca was also awarded the Highest Member GPA by the United Greek Council. 4 Sister Testimonial Shalyse Wright-Bethea Alpha Chapter – Psi Line Spring 2011 I have only been a part of this sisterhood for a short amount of time, but I don't regret it at all. I knew the sisters for a year before I finally joined Theta Chi Omega. At the time I had been looking at so other sororities in the Council at UTA, but what stuck to me is the Theta Chi Omega principles. What convinced me the most was the fact that this really seemed to be a true sisterhood. They are there when you need them and I've learned so many new things since joining the sorority that can later be used elsewhere; school, work, and every day life.
