MOHAWK VALLEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE Center for Life and Health Sciences Allied Health AH120 Surgical Technology Clinical Seminar Cr-1 Prerequisites None Co-requisites BI216 Human Anatomy & Physiology 1, AH 130 Fundamental of Surgical Technology, AH 140 Surgical Skills & Procedures Course Descriptions The purpose of the course is to introduce the student to the role of surgical technician and how that integrates with other hospital departments that support Surgical Services. Emphasis will be placed on touring and observation of various participating hospitals Operating Rooms, Central Sterile Processing, Endoscopy, Labor and Delivery and Materials Management departments. Concentration is placed on the focus of how these departments prepare and deliver patient care and supplies for operative procedures. Students will be exposed to equipment and instrumentation decontamination; tray set ups and instrument identification as well as packaging and sterilization processes. Case cart set-ups and preference card pick lists will be included. Student Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this class, the student will be able to: 1. Describe the basic role and job description of the surgical technologist. 2. Understand the principles of sterile technique and asepsis. 3. Understand surgical case management. 4. Describe principles of patient safety and needs in the perioperative setting. 5. Understand the role of pathogens, infection and “standard precautions.” 6. Identify principles in disinfection, decontamination and sterilization. 7. Describe role as a member of a surgical team. 8. Understand legal and ethical issues in healthcare. 9.
