School Safety and Crisis Response Committee Member Application
The School Safety and Crisis Response Committee (SSCRC) is seeking new committee members.
Interested candidates should carefully review the purpose and goals of the committee before submitting an
application for consideration. Below is a description of the goals of the committee, followed by the
application which is to be submitted by January 1, 2016.
OVERALL MISSION OF SSCRC: The overall mission of the SSCRC is for every school-employed
mental health professional to play a central leadership role in school safety and crisis response initiatives
within their employment setting. In order to accomplish this mission, committee members work in the
following areas: training and curriculum development, direct response and consultation, resources and
publications, evaluation and research, and promotion and advocacy.
SSCRC GOALS AND ACTIVITIES:
Commitment is an average of 3-5 hours per week, often times with tight turn-around timelines to meet
deadlines. Committee members generally work in 2-3 Subcommittees, and applicants will select the goals
and activities where they believe they can make the most effective contribution.
Committee goals are as follows:
1) Training/curriculum development: PREPaRE. Maintain and advance the PREPaRE program:
a) PREPaRE curriculum development/updating, management, and implementation
b) Advanced and refresher modules
c) Capacity building at local/state level
d) Training resources for international use
e) Trainer support
2) Direct response: National Emergency Assistance Team (NEAT). Provide crisis response support
(NEAT responses) to specific school districts in the aftermath of a crisis:
a) Virtual response via phone/email (consultation and support)
b) Onsite response (requires specific skills; consultation and training; direct service)
3) Resources and Publications: Create and maintain school safety and crisis response handouts and
crisis publications that support schools, caregivers, and school mental health professionals when
responding to crisis situations
a) Develop and update web-based handouts and fact sheets
b) Expand translations of public resources
c) Help develop articles, conference presentations, and training tools that capture “lessons learned”
regarding crisis prevention through response
4) Evaluation and Research: Build the research base to improve, adapt, and support the effectiveness
of PREPaRE and other related crisis work
a) Collect and help evaluate ongoing PREPaRE training evaluation data.
b) Help conduct committee-driven survey work
c) Help facilitate additional research related to PREPaRE (committee-university collaborations)
including feedback from responders related to the use of PREPaRE strategies in a response.
d) Help seek additional research opportunities related to school safety and crisis response issues, to
include possible grant opportunities.
5) Promotion and Advocacy: Raise awareness of and support for comprehensive school crisis planning
and response, including PREPaRE.
a) Develop, update promotion materials for use by trainers and school psychologists to bring
PREPaRE to their district/state
b) Identify and respond to opportunities to raise awareness of/support for PREPaRE and NASP’s
other crisis resources and work among national policymakers and federal leaders
c) Develop materials for delegates, state presidents and membership to raise awareness as to the
direct support services offered following a crisis; and the process for accessing services
d) Build/strengthen collaborative relationships with relevant stakeholder groups (e.g., DOE, FEMA,
HHS, ASCA, ACA, APA, NASW, NASSP, NAESP, NASRO, Red Cross, ALICE, Safe and
Sound Schools, etc...)
Required Skills and Qualities: Individuals interested in applying:













NASP Member in good standing
Must have completed at least one of the PREPaRE workshops and the corresponding Training of
Trainers workshop; however preference will be given to those who have completed both of the
NASP PREPaRE workshops and corresponding Training of Trainers workshops.
Strong writing skills to develop PREPaRE related materials
Advanced critical thinking skills to further enhance the PREPaRE curriculum and committee
work; particular focus on linking the daily practice of school safety and school psychology
Possible attendance at SSCRC Committee meetings (most likely to be held at National
Convention)
Ability to complete assigned tasks by a specific deadline
Involvement and prior experience with strategic planning, conference planning,
marketing/promoting workshops and/or trainings, using data to make data-driven decisions, and
innovative thinking to help promote and disseminate professional skills to local levels.
Ability to contribute to work via e-mail, conference calls, videoconferencing, and cloud based
applications (e.g. Dropbox, Google Docs)
Substantial experience responding to school or community crisis incidents
Ability to respond to media requests in the aftermath of a large scale incident
Awareness of trauma-informed interventions (e.g. psychological first aid, etc.)
Ability to collaborate effectively with a team
Computer Skills to include - Word, PowerPoint, Excel

joining SSCRC and how your skills/experience meets the requirements above. Discuss unique
training and crisis skills, leadership positions/opportunities related to school safety and crisis
preparedness through recovery, publications, direct crisis response opportunities, unique skills that
could further the work of the SSCRC committee, etc.)
3) Submit at least one letter of reference speaking to your leadership skill, work ethic, and crisis
intervention experience and abilities.
4) Attach a copy of your resume or brief curriculum vitae (4 pages maximum).
Completed applications are due by January 1, 2016. Please be sure your last name is included in all file
names (i.e. Smith_App.doc). Send application and accompanying documents to: Benjamin S.

20, 2016.
Top candidates will be interviewed via conference call with members of the SSCR committee.
