Macquarie Ancient Languages Winter School
The Ancient Languages Winter School offers a wide range of courses in
Classical and Koine Greek, Latin, Egyptian Hieroglyphs, Classical Hebrew,
Akkadian and others. There are also opportunities to read Greek papyri and
inscriptions, and study Greek and roman coins.
Among the selection at the 2013 Winter School are Latin Vulgate, reading
Jerome’s Tobias and the Angel; Aramaic and Coptic at beginner level; and
intermediate Akkadian, reading Sargon’s Letter to the God Ashur, an Assyrian
royal inscription.

Human Sciences Perspectives Series
Youth aspirations, participation in higher education and career choice capability:
Where to from here?
The Australian Government believes that our education system must produce
students with the skills and desire to succeed in a knowledge or skills based
economy.
Policy changes have attempted to improve academic outcomes; and to raise
career aspirations among our youth, in particular those from disadvantaged
backgrounds.
To date there have been few studies into the success of these policies. This
symposium will provide a collaborative space to share research into government
efforts in these areas, and their effects on Australian youth aspirations and
unemployment.

Young Queer Leaders’ Summit
Join us at the YQL Summit 2013 – a one-day event for students and early career
GLBTQI youth interested in leadership in business, the community sector and the
arts. This year the conference theme is Queering Up with a focus on the upward
social mobility of young queer Australians. The conference will feature
inspirational speakers, panel discussions and workshops.

Join us at this lunchtime seminar and hear the world-renowned scholar Professor
John S Kloppenborg from the University of Toronto in Canada, talk about Early
Christianity and the Ancient Associations.
Hosted by the Society for the Study of Early Christianity, the lecture will be of
interest to the general public, students, researchers and historians.

Breytenbach
Join us at this evening seminar and hear the world-renowned scholar Professor
Cilliers Breytenbach, talk to us about Early Christianity and the early church
fathers. Breytenbach is from Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany and his topic
is Early Lycaonian Christianity – Going beyond Paul, Ramsay and Harnack.

Engineering in the era of the personal genome sequence
Dr Bob Frater AO, will present a lecture on the remarkable developments in
technology in all fields over the past half century and potential for the future.

Australian Centre for Egyptology 2013 Annual Conference
Archaeological and historical problems of the New Kingdom: Akhenaten,
Tutankhamen and the Karnak Temple
Two international scholars, Dr Luc Gabolde (University of Montpellier, France) and
Dr Marc Gabolde (Senior research Fellow, French National Scientific research
Centre) will present two lectures each on their respective areas of research: the
Amarna period in Egypt, focusing on the political events at the end of the reign of
Akhenaten, and the history and development of the temple of Amun at Karnak.

The Rum Diary Rated M
In the film the Rum Diary, Johnny Depp plays a struggling journalist caught between
his commitment to reporting the truth, his editor’s obligation to his newspaper, and
the exciting yet chaotic nature of working in Puerto Rico.
For the past seven years Rodrigo Acuña – a PHD candidate at Macquarie University
– has been writing on political developments in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Drawing on his research and travel experiences, he will discuss how the Rum Diary
gives us an insight the print media while also touching on beauty and dangers of the
Caribbean.

Human Sciences Perspectives Series
Media based addictions – fact or fiction: A discussion of key issues for the
21st century
This event, sponsored by the Faculty of Human Sciences, presents a range of
perspectives on media based addictions.
While technology and media has extraordinary potential to enhance people’s lives,
finding the balance between use that enhances and use that detracts from the
human experience is not easy. This whole day workshop, featuring world authority
Professor Kimberley young along with a range of fascinating speakers, explores this
highly contentious topic and aims to examine and debate the current evidence.

MMCCS Public Lecture Series – Professor Claire Colebrook
This lecture will feature Professor Claire Colebrook from Pennsylvania State
University, USA, who will present on Se x and the (Anthropocene) City.
Colebrook is the Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of English at Pennsylvania State
University, USA. She is the author (most recently) of Gender (Palgrave 2003),
Irony (Routledge 2004), Milton, Evil and Literary History (Continuum 2008),
Deleuze and the Meaning of Life (Continuum 2010), and William Blake and
Digital Aesthetics (Continuum 2011). She has also written articles on visual
culture, poetry, literary theory, queer theory and contemporary culture and is
completing a book on human extinction.

An ex-cop and now wanted fugitive stands on the ledge of a high-rise building
while a New York Police department negotiator tries to talk him down. The longer
they are on the ledge, the more she realises that he might have an ulterior
objective.
Vince Hurley joined Macquarie University after 30 years in the NSW Police Force.
His outstanding knowledge in a vast range of policing areas, and invaluable
experience as a hostage negotiator, make him the only staff member who has
been shot at, stabbed, negotiated with armed offenders and purchased drugs
undercover.

Presenting the past: A symposium on history and the media
This two-day symposium brings together history professionals and media
practitioners to exchange ideas, skills and visions for the future. Presenters
include media professionals from television production companies, broadcasting
and funding agencies, historians, radio producers, journalists, editors and social
media specialists.
This hands-on event will give established academics, independent scholars,
postgraduates and public historians working in heritage, museums and archives
the rare opportunity to engage directly with media professionals in a networking
and training event. The symposium will include keynotes, panels and interactive
workshops.

Second Australasian Conference of Undergraduate Research (ACUR)
ACUr 2012 was a great success. 120 undergraduate students from across
Australasia presented their research and 220 people attended the conference.
The presenter of the best paper received $1000.
If you are an undergraduate student, or honours student who completed last year,
then sign up for the chance to be published in a special issue of MQ Matrix
(Macquarie University’s Undergraduate research Journal).

MMCCS Public Lecture Series – Professor Catharine Lumby
This lecture will feature Professor Catharine Lumby, Macquarie University who will
present on In the Moorehouse archives: The ethics of biography.
Lumby is the author and co-author of six books and numerous journal articles and
book chapters. She is currently writing a literary biography of the author Frank
Moorhouse. Before entering academia in 2000, she was
a journalist and opinion writer for The Sydney Morning Herald, the ABC and The
Bulletin. She has completed research projects for organisations as diverse as
Google Australia, the Australian Communication and Media Authority and the
National rugby League.

Multiculturalism, Inclusion and Participation: Lessons from the Research
In partnership with the Ethnic Communities’ Council of NSW, Macquarie
University’s Pro Vice-Chancellor (Social Inclusion) Professor Gail Whiteford, will
host a full-day forum which brings research on multiculturalism to the community.
Keynote speakers and panel discussions will uncover what we have learnt from
research on multiculturalism, participation and inclusion and how we can make it
useful in the workplace and the community.

Asia Pacific Invitational 2013 Robotics Competition
The Asia-Pacific Invitational FLL®/FTC® tournament will be the biggest FIRST®
tournament to be run in Australia to date. Teams from all over the world will travel
to Sydney and compete at Macquarie University. The tournament will be action
packed and showcase FLL robots, which are built wholly out of LEGO and
complete various tasks autonomously, as well as FTC robots, made with metalchassis to play ring It Up!

Robotics Fun Day
As part of Australian Engineering Week, Macquarie University is hosting an
afternoon of robotics fun and learning including presentations, displays, and the
opportunity to drive and program robots built by students competing at an
international level. robot enthusiasts of all ages are welcome to join in the fun. If
you are a school student, bring along a LEGO robot you have built and show it off
at our robot display table.

Each month Bushcare@MQ meets at Mars Creek to help preserve the biodiversity
of our beautiful campus. We meet with a bush regeneration expert who tells us the
work plan for the session. Bush carers are provided with all the tools and
equipment they need – and of course afternoon tea. Sessions involve weeding
and planting of trees, shrubs and groundcovers.

Cycle Skills Workshop
Cycle Skills is a free course available to all Macquarie University staff and
students. The course is designed for people who can already ride but want to
develop more skills in riding safely within various cycling environments. All
participants must bring a well-functioning bicycle and an Australian Standards
approved helmet to participate in this course. Sydney Bike Skills will run the
course.

Arboretum Walk – Bush Tucker Garden
The Macquarie University Arboretum comprises all the trees and plants on

medicine by the Darug and other Indigenous people.

Music on Winter Sundays
The Ku-ring-gai Male Choir and the Spirit of Sydney Chorus
The successful Ku-ring-gai Male Choir is one of the oldest performing male voice
choirs in Australia. Founded by ex-servicemen following the Second World War,
the choir has been in harmony since 1946 and today has over 45 performing
members.
The Spirit of Sydney Chorus is a community chorus made up of approximately 35
women who love to sing. Their repertoire includes two and three part songs,
accompanied and unaccompanied, and includes musicals and show songs,
spirituals, sacred music, Australian and International songs.

The Occasional Performing Sinfonia
The Occasional Performing Sinfonia ( TOPS) bridges the gap in community music,
allowing their orchestra to cross-over existing barriers, and provide the opportunity
tertiary students, teachers, professional musicians and members of existing
community music organisations to play together. TOPS perform a very challenging
repertoire and present concerts which are sure to entertain.

Sydney Wind Symphony
Sydney Wind Symphony is an exciting and dynamic
concert band that performs a broad and challenging repertoire that includes works
by traditional and modern-day composers. Recognised as one of the leading
community wind symphonies in the Sydney metropolitan region the ensemble
attracts talented musicians. The current Musical director is Mark Brown. Over the
years Brown has played for the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Australian Opera,
English National Ballet, Sydney Philharmonic, and professional Sydney Seasons
of a variety of stage shows and musicals.

IELTS Test Centre
The Macquarie University IELTS Test Centre is an official test centre and one of
the largest in Australia.
The Centre offers IELTS test preparation one-on-one tutoring in speaking and
writing, and an IELTS intensive preparation course in a classroom setting.

English language course developers and IELTS test tutors.

Macquarie University social sport competitions provide an opportunity for anyone
to take part in competitive and non-competitive recreational sport activities. There
are a variety of competitions on offer throughout the year from netball and
basketball, to football and futsal.
The competitions are open to all and are a great way to meet new people. You
can register as a team or as an individual and Macquarie University will look after

Macquarie University Social Sessions
If you’re looking to play sport but can’t commit to a team or a permanent time-slot
social sessions are for you. There is no need to book ahead, just turn up for a
game.
Designed for players of all levels, a Macquarie University sport representative will
oversee the session, and match you up with others of similar ability. Choose from
table tennis, badminton and basketball, and compete in a friendly atmosphere.

Exhibition – Macquarie at the Olympics
The Macquarie University Sporting Hall of Fame’s current exhibition is ‘Macquarie
at the Olympics’ which runs until October 2013.
The exhibition coincides with the 2012 Olympic year and is in honour of the
Olympic achievements of our students and alumni. The exhibition acknowledges
13 Macquarie University Olympians including Ian Thorpe, Melissa Wu, Joel
Milburn and Elisa Barnard, and takes you on their personal journey to the Games
with the support of Macquarie University.

Australian History Museum
The Australian History Museum houses over 3500 items reflecting Australia’s
history from pre-colonisation to today.

Museum of Ancient Cultures
The Museum of Ancient Cultures displays elements of everyday life from the

Macquarie University Astronomical Observatory
Take a tour of the night sky. you will see planets, binary stars, star clusters,
nebulae, and bright galaxies through our 12 inch and 16 inch in-dome telescopes.
The Astronomical Observatory operates in fine weather subject to bookings and is
closed if it is raining or extremely cloudy.
Where: Macquarie University Astronomical Observatory, access is via
Gymnasium road, near the corner of Culloden and Waterloo roads
Open: Fridays 8pm – 9.30pm during daylight savings time
(from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April), and 7pm – 8.30pm

Parenting Anxious Pre-Schoolers
The Centre for Emotional Health’s Emotional Health Clinic is providing a free
community information evening for parents of shy or anxious pre-school aged
children.
Psychologist Emily Cale will discuss:

how anxiety and shyness can affect children in their
pre-school years
• parenting strategies to help young children manage their anxiety
• available treatment options.
The discussion will include an interactive question and answer session.

Participate in free online education and treatment courses for adults with worr y,
stress, anxiety and depression. All courses are provided free of charge. Our aim is
to build courses that teach people to manage their symptoms, and by doing so
improve their quality of life and that of their families and communities.
In 2013 we will conduct clinical trials for people with symptoms of low mood,
depression, stress, social anxiety, panic and worry. Our programs are designed
for adults aged 18 and above.
But, we also have specific courses designed for adults aged 18 to 24 years and 65
years and older.

The Emotional Health Clinic
The Emotional Health Clinic is a specialist research clinic aimed at furthering our
understanding of child and adult emotional disorders and improving methods of
treatment. We offer state-of-the-art assessment and treatment of anxiety and
related disorders, based on internationally recognised research conducted by our
Centre and other esteemed research groups.
The Clinic offers specialised group and individual treatment options for anxiety
and related disorders across the lifespan, for pre-school aged children through to
older adults.

With a train station on campus and buses running from many areas of the city it
