VOLUNTEERING ROLE OUTLINE
The opportunity has arisen to join the team at Tyne Metropolitan College in a voluntary role working
within their community gym, Flex Fitness. The key tasks that the volunteer will undertake include
promoting a clean, safe environment for all Flex Fitness customers. Offer expert advice with regards
to training, health and fitness. The volunteers will be giving guidance and training from Chris Bunten
the manager of Flex Fitness.
Summary of Principal Responsibilities:
 Providing efficient and customer oriented reception service.
 Providing high quality customer care to our members, user and hirers.
 Arranging and delivering recreation activities appropriate to qualification, ensuring quality of
service and customer satisfaction.
 Maintenance and cleanliness of fitness equipment.
 Providing fitness inductions and programme consultations.
 Provide a safe, clean and enjoyable environment for all customers.
 Responsible for financial transactions on new memberships, casual bookings and banking
procedures.
 To assist Flex Fitness Manager and Sports Technician on promotional events.
 Carry regular and rigorous building checks, including changing facilities, sports hall, astro
pitch and dance studio (specifically related to QA campus).
 Demonstrate on-going commitment to raising standards and continuous improvement, and
on-going contribution to college policies and procedures.
 Demonstrate on-going engagement with / commitment to the college’s vision and values
and to delivering against clear strategic objectives and targets, understanding your own
contribution to the achievement of those targets.
 To promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young persons for whom you have
responsibility or come into contact with.
 Any other tasks and responsibilities commensurate with the grading of the position.
PERSONAL SPECIFICATION
Specific Knowledge
 Sound knowledge of anatomy
 Understanding of the physiological requirements of leading healthy lifestyle.
Skills and Abilities
 Good IT skills including knowledge of Outlook and Excel
 Extremely motivated and passionate about working in sport and fitness
 Ability to offer innovative ideas, problem solve, make decisions and be comfortable working
under pressure
 Excellent communication skills
Experience/Training
 Experience or interest in sport and fitness
 Experience of developing and maintaining effective relationships – internal and external at
all levels in a diverse environment
Benefits of Volunteering
In addition to the valuable experience, volunteers will be able to apply to the Northumbria Sport
Foundation Leadership bursary scheme. The Foundation offers funding support for students wishing
to gain additional Sports qualifications (this is an application process and is not guaranteed).
Volunteers will also get access to free first aid and child protection courses. Volunteers in certain
roles will also be supported in applying for a DBS check. Volunteers will also receive a t-shirt and
hoodie to be worn as uniform.
Conditions of Volunteer Role
Conduct yourself in an appropriate and professional manner whilst representing the university.
Agree to and sign the volunteer contract prior to beginning your role.
