Ancient Leaders Debate Assessment Sheet 9th Grade Individuals & Societies-Word History Pre-History Standards for Criteria and Success: The students will be able to demonstrate knowing and understanding by: (Criterion A) ii. Demonstrating knowledge and understanding of subject-specific content and concepts through developed descriptions, explanations and examples. The student will be able to demonstrate investigation by: (Criterion B) iii. Using research methods to collect and record appropriate information. iv. Evaluating the process and results of the investigation, with limited guidance. The student will be able to demonstrate communication by: (Criterion C) Communicating information and ideas appropriately in a style selected for the audience and purpose. Structuring information and ideas in a way that is appropriate to the specified format, with some guidance. Documenting sources of information appropriately. The student will be able to demonstrate critical thinking by (Criterion D): ii. Analyze information to make valid, well-supported arguments. iv. Interpret different perspectives and their implications. Product : Students will be role playing ancient world leaders from a student selected civilization. Students will research their ancient civilization to determine if the past successes can be applied to solve problems in today’s world. The students will communicate their investigated information through a debate. Students will focus their research on developing possible solutions as well as the ability to maintain the solutions for the long term. Students will also develop and submit questions for audience interaction. Students will demonstrate their investigative skills first by creating an action plan. Students will continue their investigation by properly recording and documenting their sources by citing information discovered during research. Students will create an outline to record data. During the outlining process, students will evaluate their recorded data for relevancy to their topic. A final reflection of the investigative process will be a separate paper that will be generated from notes entered in learning journals. In the journals, students will demonstrate understanding through detailing their ancient leader’s position regarding today’s world problems. A persuasive oral argument & written argumentative 5 paragraph essay will accompany their debate to demonstrate their positions regarding real world issues. Students will also be required to articulate their positions in a debate forum. Students will be required to interpret different perspectives and implications during the investigative process in order to anticipate topics that may arise during the debate. Students will be required to present their understanding of the ancient leader’s position on the topic, rebut other leader’s comments, ask one question and answer one question as a member of the debate. A completed outline with information and sources properly cited in your project journal. One well thought out question that you would like to have answered as part of the debate. A 5 paragraph argument that explains your ancient leader’s position regarding debate topics that is typed in the Times New Roman 12 size font style. 5. A Works Cited page, at the end, in an APA citation style. 6. A written reflection about your learning while completing this project. Audience: The remaining students will be additional ancient world leaders that will debate the viability of their solutions in an exhibition format. September 29-Submit ONE question about a debate topic that you would like to have answered during the debate ON AN INDEX CARD. October 6 & 7-Debates to be held. October 10-Submit learning journal & final reflection.
