Communication / Affective Language 1. Review in small group: Definition of Communication (Wikipedia): (from Latin "communis", meaning to share) is the activity of conveying information through the exchange of thoughts or messages, as by speech, visuals, signals, writing, or behavior. It is the meaningful exchange of information between two or more. Affective Language = Authentic expression of feelings in response to specific actions/behaviors (An affective statement incorporates BOTH the particular BEHAVIOR/ACTION and the resulting FEELING/IMPACT. Is used both to praise and re-direct behaviors) 2. Cycle of Inquiry: (consider communication between ALL members of the school community, including parents/families) What does “healthy” communication look like, sound like, feel like? Is “healthy” the right word to use here? What role do our intentions play in our communication? What does non-verbal communication look like? What role does culture have in communication? What are some challenges that prevent us from effectively communicating? When do “mis-understandings” occur? What role does “authentic expressions of feeling” have within communication? How does one effectively use communication to reinforce positive behaviors and redirect challenging behaviors. How can communication be used to build, strengthen, and sustain relationships? How does the quality of one’s relationship with another impact communication? ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ 3.
