What is marine debris? Marine debris, or litter, is human-created waste that has been deliberately or accidentally released in the ocean, sea or waterway. It includes a range of waste materials — from plastic bottles, to buckets, fishing nets and gear, cigarette butts to ropes, plastic bags and packaging. This debris can be hazardous for divers and beach goers. It is also harmful to marine life such as birds, sharks, turtles and mammals. A winner from each category will be announced on World Oceans Day, 8 June 2014. It may cause death or injury to marine life through drowning or through entanglement or starvation after being eaten by animals which may confuse it with prey. For example, turtles often confuse plastic bags for jellyfish. A winner from each category will be announced in June 2014. This debris can be hazardous for divers and beach goers.
