1.
Align the 9 glasses on a table.
2.
The pupils measure the volume of one glass
(=8/8) (or 4/4)
3.
Let the pupils calculate and measure in such a way that the glasses are filled up with different fractions of water :8/8, 7/8 , 6/8, 5/8, 4/8, 3/8,
2/8, 1/8 (or 4/4, 3/4, 2/4, 1/4, 0/4)
4.
Label: Starting with the glass with the most water and working with the least, label your glasses from 1 to 8 using a marker ( or 1 to 5)
5.
They add food coloring: each glass has a different colour. It is important to keep the glasses in the order of most to least water.
6.
Play :using a plastic spoon , gently tap on the higher edge each glass and listen for the sound it makes.The kids note that each glass emits a different sound.
7.
They will be wowed at how water level makes an impact on the sound that projects from each glass. The fraction of water in each glass produces a different pitch.
8.
Once they’ve gotten comfortable tapping their glasses, they try playing the song
“Happy birthday”

The glass with the most water = SLOWEST sound wave
Vibrations = LOWEST PITCH
The glass with the least water = FASTEST sound wave
Vibrations = HIGHEST PITCH

The pupils have measured the volume of one glass
(=8/8) so they can calculate !
They mark each glass They add food coloring

With a teaspoon they slightly strike the higher edge of the glasses: the fraction of water in each glass produces a different pitch.
Once they’ve gotten comfortable tapping their glasses, they try playing the song below:
8/8 8/8 7/8 8/8 5/8 6/8
Hap- py birth- day to you
8/8 8/8 7/8 8/8 4/8 5/8
Hap- py birth- day to you
8/8 8/8 1/8 3/8 5/8 6/8 7/8
Hap- py birth- day dear (name)
2/8 2/8 3/8 5/8 4/8 5/8
