Regarding: Safety on the streets of Kenwood
Dear Supervisor Gorin,
The Valley of The Moon Alliance is a group of over a thousand members, a majority living in the
Kenwood area, whose vision is to help protect the rural agricultural character of Sonoma Valley. We
would like to make sure all are aware of a potentially dangerous situation on the streets of Kenwood.
These streets are the responsibility of Sonoma County. Therefore we would like your attention directed
to Maple and Shaw Avenues, along the full length to include Shaw Park.
Presently Shaw Ave has cars parked on both sides of the road daily. There is little room sometimes for
even one car to get through. The concern is that an emergency vehicle may not be able to travel this
street if needed. This is a safety concern. Some of the congestion could be addressed with VJB finding
more parking but it may not be solved. We feel this and other concerns warrant your attention.
Maple Ave is a block down from Shaw and borders the other side of Shaw Park. It gets overflow parking
presently, but during soccer season when games are played at Shaw Park, the parking is a real circus
again.
Kenwood streets are narrow and without sidewalks or pedestrian paths. The kids walk on the streets to
school in hopes drivers see them. We try to remain aware of this as a community. We have gotten an
influx of buses and luxury coaches that circle the streets after dropping off their riders. They are big
vehicles and possibility not aware of the street sizes and traffic. There is not much truck traffic on most
of the residential streets in Kenwood. This is a pedestrian safety concern.
The VOTMA board feels that this situation is a condition of the over concentration of visitor serving
facilities in this area. We hope that the county will help us find solutions.
Thank you,
Kathy Pons, Mark Donahoe, Linda Hale, Gini Dunlap, Roger Peters and Del Rydman
